Is anyone out there doing this?
I saw that you can run your DVR tuner to your computer that has your Plex server on it. Then you can watch live tv on any device with Plex, and record shows from those devices.

It says it's compatible with this little bugger, only $70. Run your antenna to it and then plug it into your computer.

Everything I read about it says you can record two shows and blah blah, but what I really want to know is if I can watch live tv on all my devices with Plex. I have issues with getting cable run to certain rooms b/c of cathedral ceilings and where the tvs are so being able to watch live locals on those tvs isnt' possible unless I can stream it like this.

Currently only available on android tv and iOS. Also:

quote:

There are some limitations when watching live TV currently:

- Live TV viewing cannot currently be shared. Only the Plex Media Server owner account can currently watch live TV.

- Live TV requires the ability to transcode the content, so you need to ensure you run Plex Media Server on a device capable of transcoding. (Some NAS devices may not be able to transcode.)

- Closed-captioning or alternate audio channels are not currently supported for Live TV.

- You cannot pause or time-shift (e.g. rewind) the stream. We're working to support this functionality soon.

- Flinging or casting playback to another Plex app is not currently supported.

- You cannot initiate a recording of what you're currently watching in the client. If you wish to start recording, you'll need to stop live playback and then start recording.

I'm deep into Plex, but don't use this feature.

well that sucks.
I have an android tv but that's the 1 tv I have the antenna hooked up to, so I don't need it for that.

I thought I was coming across something great.
I hardly ever watch live tv anyway outside of sports, so I guess I could still do this to record shows and watch them whenever, assuming Kodi fails me at some point.

It probably will be, but it's far too early. This feature has only recently been added and it isn't mature yet.

I do all that with Windows Media Center as my server. Connected a Homerun Tuner (connected to an antenna) to my network using Cat5 so my WMC server can see it. I record to the WMC Server and can watch on any connected device including Kodi on my Amazon FTVs. Homerun only has 2 tuners so that limits me to watching on 2 devices at 1 times....or recording on 1 and watching 1. There is a Homerun Prime that has 3 tuners and a DVR but Ive never used it.....and you need to pay for the guide subscription to use the DVR.....Windows Media Center guide is free LINK....and it looks like you can piggyback them so you could have 6 tuners with 2 homeruns.

That was my setup on my Windows 8 machine but they broke the EPG so I assumed it went away forever. I tried to get a third party EPG to work but ended up giving up when Sling came out.

Does everything work the way it use to?

I have a Win 7 machine so not sure about Win10. I just hope Microsoft keeps providing the EPG.

Didn't know that. They broke epg in win8 so I figured it was for all versions.

Are you sure? a quick google seems to show it works for 8 and 10. I know 10 removed WMC as a free option but it otherwise looks like it works.

Yeah, one day the guide quit working and wouldn't let me update the epg. Tried 3rd parties with no luck and right before I upgraded to 10 before the free deadline I spent a couple of days (again) tying to get it to work with no luck.

There's been a widespread guide outage for at least the last week. Are you not affected? I sure am.

Long thread on it here.

LINK

It started back in March for some people, but I first noticed it here (Cox, BR) a week ago. The thread has been very very active the past few weeks.

So it looks like its a problem if you have cable tv, correct? I just have an antenna connected so only need EPG for local channels.

Could be. I do have CableCARD, which these days, is required to have cable at all. Looks like I reverse-jinxed myself, as hoped. I got the guide back today, and I hadn't spoken about it before posting here. Per the thread I linked, it looks like it's coming back to lots of people.

@TeddyPadillac
I use that Hauppage adapter with my Xbox One S. Hook that up to a digital antenna and then the USB end goes to my Xbox One S. However, we can't do DVR functionality (exactly) since it just records the last 30 minutes of a show that you're watching.

However that's a limitation of Xbox One S, not that tuner. So yes, I believe that tuner plus Plex will DVR OTA channels.

How big of a hard drive would you need to keep, say, 100 hours of HD? 500 GB?
