Upgrading an older laptop

My current laptop is an Asus UX305FA that I bought new in 2014 or 2015, it has an Intel M-5Y10 processor which is obviously way outdated. Aside from that, I love the laptop because its form factor is great, but I think I need a slight upgrade.
My wife just got a new laptop for work and her Dell XPS 13 9350 is up for grabs. It has an Intel i5-7200U, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd. I am considering wiping her laptop clean, upgrading to 1tb storage and using it for myself. I only use a laptop at home for photo/music storage and web browsing. There is no heavy computing going on here.
Would this be a good move? I hate the idea of tossing two perfectly functioning laptops out and paying 600+ for a new one. One other thing to consider is Windows says the XPS cannot be updated to Windows 11 due to the processor. I’ve read I can get around that.

Just buy a new Mac for a grand or so. No need to keep bandaging an old PC. The Mac will last for 10 years and can run Windows if you need it.

Fair point and one I’ve considered, but I do not want to shell out $1,000+ for a laptop seeing minimal use.
Edit: and when I say minimal use, I’m talking I might fire up the laptop once every 2 or 3 months.

I get it. I use my laptop constantly. Do what you feel is right. The idea of resurecting an older PC reads pointless to me. I have a 15 year old iMac that still reads email and handles my huge photo library. But I do pay a bit for storage on iCloud. 2.99 for a terabyte I think.

Don’t spend money on a 7200u laptop unless you’re running something other than windows.
Get a used thinkpad/lattude/elitebook on ebay.
8259u(9.5 gen) or 10th gen i5 is ~$130.
11th gen i5 is ~$175
These are built to last, dock easily, repair, and work with any accessory.

No, you can't. They're constantly deprecating processors, which is why I haven't been able to get a security update in over a year on a similarly aged laptop. Even after the registry "fixes" it's "CPU unsupported" and no updates will download.
Go on ebay and get a last generation Surface for $300.

if you only use it 4 times a year why bother?

I mainly need the storage. I can spend $80 to $150 to upgrade to 1tb or spend $600+ on a new laptop. That’s why I was thinking saving some e-waste and using the Dell might be a better option because it has a better processor than my Asus.. My current laptop (the Asus) is 256gb and nearly maxed out.

Did Microsoft change something? I’ve seen numerous posts on Reddit of people installing Windows 11 on noncompatible machines with no issues getting updates afterwards.

Not seeing these prices with >256gb SSD.

Well, since you'll use it so infrequently seems to me gettin a 1T is a no brainer...

They add new processors to the completely unsupported list on about a quarterly basis. I didn’t even know that was a thing until the 2H2024 update. It’s funny how I paid for a windows license and it just evaporated.

Nope 256g is/was standard. Few enterprise customers see a need to go beyond that.
$500g Nvme drives are $35 1TB are $60. Less than that on resell markets. I’m selling a 1TB cheap w/ 100% health and can’t even get one single reply.
No point updating a 7200u machine if you use Windows. Not worth the hassle.

Does a $5 Groupon license really count?
It’s weird that they actually advertised the TPM1 hack and then disabled it though.

Great input. Appreciate it.

It really is bullshite. Hate how Windows rolled this out. Increase e-waste 10 fold, force consumers into a new laptop when there is nothing wrong with the one they have.

Bump. Per advice here, I’ve been browsing eBay for laptops around $350 or less. I’m sure there are other better deals I haven’t found yet, but which of these would be the tech boards choice for basic home use?

For the price, I really like the Asus and the Acer. Issue with Asus is core i3. The Lenovo E14 sounds nice if I could get it for less. I have read the E series are notably worse build quality.

That’s the one I’m drawn to as well. Ram can be upgraded to 32gb, which I’d probably never need. Seems the most future proof. Acer quality could be questionable.
Posted on 7/23/25 at 1:24 pm to jordan21210
The thinkpad is actually a well built machine, likely includes thunderbolt, has somewhat modern architecture, and by far the best GPU for anything but maybe gaming. There is no such thing as future proof right now.
I basically have that exact same vivibook just w/ the 1220p instead of the lower power 1215u. It’s garbage and I paid that same price brand new when it was actually a current model.
