Turning an old "dumb" security system into a smart system?

So this one is kind of a flyer. We've got an old wired home security system that is hard wired into the house. Door sensors, window sensors, etc. Since all of the sensors are analog (I'd assume) I would love to pull the main board out and then use the sensors in a smart home application (like integrating it with home assistant). I would really use it for security per se, I just thing it would be a fun project to see if I could get it to work.
If you were thinking about doing something like this, where would you start?
Thank in advance for any ideas.

Depending on the hardware, I’d buy an system enhancement module and put it on alarm dot com.

what is the main board?
if it's a DCS or Honeywell add a envisalink module. I use it on my panel.
If it's not DCS or Honeywell, go with Konnected.io
with either the envisalink or Konnected, you can integrate into HomeAssistant. We never arm our panel. HomeAssistant arms it once we are no longer home.
Depending on how you set up your zones you could also use it to trigger automations. In my old house our garage door and front door had their own zones. I could use that to turn on the garage light or porch light. Also had it set up, so if the alarm triggers all our house lights turn on. If someone tried to turn a light off, the light would turn back on until the alarm trigger was cleared.

Yeah, I went to that other site and thought the poster was messing with me.
