I was at the public library earlier this week and was suddenly denied access to the public wifi for unauthorized use of tor on the network. My browser displayed the message (no pop ups) and when i tried to reconnect to wifi it said access denied due to security violation. I wasn't using tor and have never on the laptop I was using.I am frequently researching terrorism, national security, etc for the the masters program I'm in so my browsing habits are centered around those subjects.

Any ideas what triggered this? phishing attempt, glitch in network security, NSA coming for me?

Best case scenario is that you drop everything right now, buy a bus ticket to Montana, shave you head ( or get a wig if your bald) and maybe you're one step ahead. they are coming for you

I'm surprised that a local library would have such a warning. My guess is that they have an IT guy who is a bit too gung-ho, nobody else there will have a clue.

My suggestion would be to get in touch with said IT guy, walk him through exactly what you're doing to replicate the problem, and hope he'll realize it's all good.

I went to the help desk and there was a 70 year old woman that pointed more towards the "it" desk which was a middle aged woman surfing facebook. She asks me why i'm trying to look at Tor and I said never mind.

Why were you doing this at the library instead of home?

I like a change of scenery sometimes so I do work at the library or coffee shop. It's a pretty common practice...

Libraries and Librarians are normally sympathetic towards Tor. There is even a project to make libraries Tor exit nodes.

Library Freedom Project.

Nothing installed. I might have to double check but I don't remember adding it.
