TCL remote won't control soundbar

I just bought a new TCL series 7 QLED and in trying to pair it with a Vizio soundbar, probably 3-4 years old. Volume works fine on the soundbar but I can't control it with the TV remote. I've got them connected with a digital optical cable. Would getting a digital optical cable to HDMI adapter help or just get a whole new remote to control everything? Didn't have the issue with my old LG TV

Can you not connect with an HDMI cable? Earc would be far superior to optical which is kind of dated technology. It might be the solution.

The soundbar does not have an HDMI port

Really? You sure? Seems like a soundbar that's only 3-4 years old would definitely have an HDMI or HDMI-ARC port

No HDMI. Maybe it's older than I stated.
I got it to work through Bluetooth with the remote for volume, but it won't turn the soundbar off.

My Sonos soundbar doesn’t work with that remote either.
I had to buy a Sideclick.

maybe i'm missing something here, but not sure i've EVER turned off my soundars. if the tv is off; there's no sound coming from the soundbar so i'm not sure other than rebooting the soundbar because of an issue why it would matter if you can turn it on or off.
and to the other person; i had to send my sonos Ray back because it wouldn't pair with my samsung frame remote because for some ridiculous, inexplicable reason, SONOS didn't include eARC with a new soundbar they literally launched 2 years ago. I returned it to SONOS and bought the older, Beam model instead since it has HDMI.
