I've been on Sonos for awhile. I run plex, have loke 12 speakers. All types. I'm all in.

I have an old-ish (3 years) super solid Samsung HWQ90R 7.1.4 surround system. It's great. It's in a ightly open room, so the surround effect isn't perfect. But it puts out very good sound.i do like it.

But want an Arc/Sub to pair with 2 Fives for a surround system. But Sonos is only 5.1.2.

Am I really losing that much to get more efficient? Sonos sounds does blow me away in general for music, and the 2 fives are amazing.

But for movies the Samsung works well, I just have two many systems.

Plus I hear Sonos is going release new play 3s/5s which are 360 degree sound/upcoming speakers. That will give the movie sound a big boost. But I don't want to buy based on that.

Anyone havean Arc and Sub at least can comment on the quality?

I just don't see the need for a 7.1 system. I honestly can't tell the difference. Perhaps if my room had better acoustics and dimensions (I too have an open floor plan) I could enjoy it.

I try to keep things simple. I run 4 ceiling speakers in a stereo pair and a sub - all of which are Sonos products. To me, this sounds the best. I could (and have tried) using the rear speakers as surrounds and add a play bar for the center, but I always go back to the stereo pair.

Again, it depends on your room size, acoustics and hearing. I would try the 5.1 setup you mentioned below. Arc/Sub and 2 fives would be a fantastic setup. I run the arc and a mini sub in my bedroom and it is amazing (and overkill).

I have the OG Playbar and the OG sub along with 2 rear Play:1's and the sound is very good for my room.

The Play:5s will be overkill for movies and will be VERY loud for music so hopefully your room is quite larger. If not, stick with the Play:1s as rears. I've heard the Arc has even better "atmos like" sound for certain movies and such. The OG Playbar has been more than good for me for almost 8 years now.

Now that YouTube TV has 5.1, hearing the crowds in NFL or CFB games coming from in the rears is funny. Sometimes you'll catch a fan clearly yelling "frick YOU MOTHER frickER!" coming from the back right speaker or something. Almost not the best when you have an 8 and 6 year old but it's comical.

Good to hear. If the rumors are true though, it will be an easy upgrade later too.

I have playbar + sub and arc + sub with one-SLs for surrounds. The arc is nice but it has never blown my mind with amazing atmos surround sound.

I have an arc, sub and two Ones as surrounds.

The arc and sub are overpriced, but you’re buying into the ecosystem. My previous soundbar system was a vizio that sounded just as good, but was a total mess in terms of bugs and compatibility; Vizio’s eArc implementation is a disaster.

Fives are overkill as surrounds for movies, but if filling a large room with music is your primary objective, they could make sense.

I have a beam gen2 in my bedroom and find it to be a better value than the arc.

Arc cannot be purchased alone. It needs a sub and/or surrounds.
