I had two soundsystems for awhile (even three if you count a few years with Amazon echo stuff).

I whittled it all down to Sonos a few months ago, converted my TV room from Samsung bar (the nice 2020 bar+rears+sub that did atmos) to the Arc+Sub. Had Fives as rears for a bit then move them back to another room and got the Era 300s.

Most said in this thread is true. Expensive. Easy to use. Sound great. About as close to audiophile sound as you can get without 99% of the work and setup.

For me, Sonos is perfect and worth it. It's just so fire and forget that I avoid all headaches of compatability, ease of use of moving rooms, the mobile speakers are awesome and I use them all the time outside. BUT I wouldn't do Sonos unless you are making it a primary home sound system. There is value in other brands if you just want good living room sound. If you want to redo music and entertainment in your home, it's the best choice if you can afford.

For reference my system includes two rooms setup for surround. A pair of 5s and a sub for the prime listening space, some ones spread around and both a move and a roam.

I'm curious about crossing the streams. For example, if I upgraded my rears x2 from the Play:1's (the OGs) to the new Era 300's that do dolby atmos. Will they play nice with the Sonos Playbar gen1?

The playbar can't do atmos but the Era 300s can. How does that work for music and movies when you cross generations?

I'm sure the sonos forums have that answer. My guess would be yes, but it wouldn't be worth it without the atmos from the bar as well?

The capabilities of the soundbar are the limiting factor. If the soundbar can only support 5.1 that is all it will support.

Gotcha. Thanks for that, I guess that makes sense. You only can playback what the best your main source can produce. Since the playbar is only capable of a simulated 5.1, that's the best I'll get.

Well damn, in that case, that an OY in the pocketbook. No way am I gonna get the new ARC + 300s as rears. That's what, $800 + $450 + $450. Hot damn.

I think the era 300 as rears are an awful value considering you can use the Ikea speakers as rears for $120/each and they sound awesome.

I will say after having 2 other Atmos systems prior, the Sonos system has the most clearly defined "space." It feels the most expansive. Maybe not 100 percent worth it, but if you want Atmos surround, I am enjoying it so far.
