Sonos play 5 as center channel speaker in 7.1 setup question

Ok so we already have a Sonos Play 5 that we use to play music for the family and he little ones.
My question becomes, can I somehow connect the play 5 to my receiver to use it as the Center channel speaker in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup?

So my receiver is the pioneer elite vsx 50 and I'm wondering if I could somehow use an adapter for L and R cables to just the audio in input on the Sonos play 5.

Anyone have thoughts on this? I've googled my face off and can't find anything. Maybe that means it's not possible?

I'm not sure if or how you can do this, but my question would be why? You really should be timbre matching your LCR speakers and a center speaker is pretty affordable. If you're just looking to upgrade a HTIB 5.1 system then I suggest looking into a better budget friendly option.

I just don't see an instance where this would work well.

Good point. So I have a center, left and right front and then in the house we bought, they already had a ceiling l/r front and l/r back.
All of these work pretty good now with our pioneer receiver but we have the play:5 off to the right on a bookshelf all lonely and stuff.

Goal was to see if I could swap out the smaller sized Center speaker for the Play:5 to incorporate the Sonos into the surround sound AND just use it as a Sonos speaker whenever we wanted.
2 birds, 1 stone attempt.

However, I'm not sure how that would sound since the Sonos is pretty much built to be a standalone? Is it even possible?

I'm sure there is a way, whether it is mechanically correct is another thing.

Assuming it is a normal 3.5 mm audio cable, you can buy a 3.5 mm audio to bare wire cable. Saw one on Amazon for like 6$. Try Radio Shack. If it doesn't work, just bring it back.

Just buy a Playbar and use it for your LCR. It rocks.

I'm very tempted to do this, actually. Question though. If I were to get a playbar and plug it into the optical out from my receiver, would I ONLY be playing sound to the Playbar?
As in, would my ceiling speakers also play sound?

I'm so tempted to slowly start sonos'ing my house out and eventually ditch my receiver and such.

I did. It's awesome. Pricey, but awesome.

I think you can do this but I would worry about sound sync. One may lag the other. You may want to call Sonos support and talk through it with them.

What's your setup? I'm really inclined to slowly do:
Soundbar for Front R, C, L
2x Play 1s for Back L and R.

However, I still have 4 speakers in my ceiling. Front R/L and Back R/L. I guess I'd have to add a Connect:AMP. shite, maybe 2 Connect:AMPs for both Front and Back R/L.

Yikes, add in a sub and that's well over $2,000.
Anyways, what's your setup? And does it sound better than a traditional receiver + 5.1/7.1 setup? Or at least as good? I don't need my damn walls to rattle.

I have a Playbar (LCR), two Play1s as surrounds, and a Sonos Sub. I'm running it all through a Sonos Boost.

To me it sounds as good if not better than my old receiver/wired speaker setup which was Harman Kardon/Boston Acoustic. Especially at higher volumes I get more clarity and less distortion.

I have no receiver. The hdmi cables input to a switch with one hdmi to the tv. Tv optical out to the Playbar.

All in it was over $2,000 but my older receiver and some components were not playing well with newer versions of HDCP which required me to constantly tinker with the system. Finally I was facing having to get a new receiver. so I just said screw it rather than doubling down on antiquated receiver tech.

Plus the added benefit of adding wireless speakers throughout the house was awesome.

To keep some of your wired speakers I think you are looking at a connect amp + Playbar setup.

Maybe I'm just not in tuned with everything Sonos can do, but what is the benefit of this? There are a lot of better options for speakers for less price. I can play anything I want throughout my house from my Multi-Zone receiver and app from my phone.

For me, it simplifies some stuff. No need for a receiver, less/no wires (other than a power cord). Plus it allows for myself and family to incorporate other sonos speakers (Play 5 currently in the living room, 2 play 1s in separate bedrooms) and if I add one to go outside, can also play outdoors with no wires (other than power cord).

I don't believe Sonos is for the audiophile but it definitely is for the family that needs to appease momma and the kids as well. Simplicity is next to godliness now that I've gotten older. Happy family = less bitching and problem solving = have a beer outside on my deck while I relax.

One additional question, how do you control your volume for Playbar + any additional speakers? You can use a traditional or Harmony (universal) remote, correct?
You're not forced to use the Sonos app exclusively, are you?

Makes sense. I guess in my life (wife, son, second on the way) we just don't listen to that much music within the house. Outside is a different story, but I just have a wireless BT speaker for that.

Hope it works out for you. I'm interested in the final result.

It's super easy and there are multiple ways to do it. Mainly I use my Harmony Ultimate One. You can also use the Sonos app or the Harmony phone app. And surprisingly I find myself using the hard buttons on the top of the PLAY1s which are on the sofa table behind my head if I'm too lazy to get my phone or the remote.

I have not even tried any other wireless speaker system so I don't know how to compare it. But the Sonos system can support your home theater plus have a speaker in every room of the house that can be controlled independently and play not only your music library but Pandora, XM/Sirius, Internet radio stations, and streaming services.

So then my final question is, can I use a connect amp to connect 4 speakers (my ceiling speakers)?

Hmmm ok, so that'd be half my battle. They are all the same speakers so they should. Next issue I am seeing is - my TV is somewhat old.

That manual is for my TV model/Brand (Samsung). I think it only has an optical out vs. in. That should mean that I'm ok, right?
I'm so tempted to go blow my money load on this and see if it works. I like the challenge.

As long as the tv has HDMI in and an optical audio out you should be good.

The only thing this can do that my AVR can't is handle wireless speakers. My Zone 2 is split between rooms and I can control it by my phone and listen to all of those Internet sources.
