Security of NAS

How difficult us it to make a NAS server secure?
I would assume that very experienced IT professionals could make their server very secure.
But what about average joes with a server which they use for PLEX and to backup their PC?
I have a Synology system. Would you trust their security features?
I'm also considering setting up a family email server, but that seems especially ripe for hacking.

I have never messed with synology but my understanding is their OS is similar to apple in the fact that it is easy to learn and it just works. Depending on what you have running in your NAS and how you have it configured, that would be more indicative of your level of security. I believe Synology allows for access anywhere so you should have 2FA/MFA enabled. Do you share it out to friends? Have you created complex builtin admin password and use complex passwords for your account to access it? Do you have share permissions setup? Plenty of “things to look at” but what is your appetitive for risk in the event you lose the data or some bad actor gets ahold of it?
Why would you take on the hassle of maintaining an email server locally? What type of email server? Unless just as a lab to play with ok, but seems like going against the grain with trends of the cloud.

Setting up a secure NAS... secure from whom, the outside world or internally? The Synology is a pretty good box, provided you do not allow it to talk outside of your network, from what I can see they call home, a lot! and do not use the external access features. if you must Sync files to/from another site, do it with another mechanism like rsync over SSH.
Hosting your own email server can be an adventure, but must be done in a DMZ, then relayed inside. There are some good appliances available, I like EFS (Email Forwarding System), it can do a lot,
filtering, whitelist/blacklist, virus scanning, etc, it takes a little tinkering to get going but will be worth the effort.

quote:Will it? Everything I've read says it's basically neverending pain. I think the biggest challenge is keeping your server off everyone else's blacklists.

Poorly worded run on sentence.. the tinkering with EFS would be worth it IF you were running your own email server... running your own public facing servers (web, email, etc) is usually an exercise in masochism....but some people enjoy that sort of thing....ummmm I mean enjoy the challenge, yeah that's what I meant.

I wasn't trying to bust your balls btw, I was just wondering if things have changed since I last researched it a few years back. I wish it was easy for anyone to spin up an email server, but unfortunately I think spammers have made that all but impossible to do without losing your sanity.
