Security Camera System Question

I purchased a new house that came with a security system of 4 cameras all run to a single point with Cat5 cables. The previous owner took the DVR/NVR with them when the left so I need to purchase a new one.
1) Are they all similar since it is basically just a storage device? Which would you recommend 2TB or less?
2) I'm not tech savvy- is it as simple as plugging in the 4 Cat5 wires into the back of the DVR/NVR, connecting that to a monitor, and setting everything up like that?

Installed a new 4 camera system a couple months ago. Im far from an expert, but as far as I know they should be fairly similar. I would look into what type of cameras you already have as far as resolution and all that and just make sure the dvr is capable of recording that type of resolution. For our system we just plugged in the cables directly to these dvr and that was all that was needed. Just check the type of connection that the cat5 cables have and make sure it’s compatible with the dvr.

Make sure the system has PoE since your cameras sound like they rely on it for juice

Pretty sure the little label says PoE...

Some manufacturers will only work with their own NVR. What brand are the cameras?

Also, it may not be worth pursuing, I'm pretty sure they can't just take the NVR if the house is sold as having a surveillance system. Unless the contract specifically says the NVR doesn't convey.

quote:This was already tried. Long story short, the MLS listing specifically stated surveillance and security camera system. However, in the actual contract documents, it was not explicitly stated. Therefore, I don't really have a leg to stand on and $200 isn't worth getting legal involved.

If nothing else, at least you have the wires run through the attic. That is usually the worst part!
Do the cams work with that system?

Soooo I got the NVR in, plugged in the 4 cameras, HDMI to monitor, and Ethernet to modem and the 4 boxes are black. No picture. Does it take a while for the feed to eventually come through?
