Scanning external hard drive for virus without endangering my PC

I've got an old external hard drive that has some files that I'd like to transfer to my new laptop. The hard drive has not been used in several years and I'm concerned there might be malware on it. Is it safe to connect to my laptop for a scan with Microsoft Defender?

if you are trying to take all precautions before connecting the drive then you should step up the protection first. Install kaspersky free first, then connect the drive, then scan the drive.
Anything on that drive would be at least several years old and likely well documented in the databases now. The risk level should be low.

kaspersky
The russian software? It's getting banned by the white house. I'd recommend malwarebytes.

I don't let misinformation influence me. Kaspersky always tests the best and all the privacy and security experts always check to see if it sends any unknown information it shouldn't. Nobody ever finds anything wrong with it.

I mean, you're not wrong. Just saying it may not be available in the future. It's solid right now.

Are you capable of setting up a VM, test the drive or files in that environment and move what is neede?
