Samsung Smart TV (KS8000 series) and SoundBar issues

I have a 65" Samsung KS8000(something-or-other) and. Polk Audio 3.1 soundbar and I'm having trouble getting the Samsung universal remote to control the sound for anything other than Cox.
The sound works, but I can't increase/decrease/mute when in Netflix/Hulu/etc. or gaming consoles without using the organic Polk remote. The "universal" TV remote works with Cox just fine, but that's it.
Any advice? I can get model numbers if you need them.
TIA.
(Best Buy guys said I should swap the soundbar for a "Samsung" bar, but I'm not confident that it will be a "quality improvement" because their a TV company, not an sudio company..)

I'll have to check when I get a second and see if that TV has a varable audio out. I'm assuming you have the soundbar connected to the audio out of the TV and are using the smart TV functions for Netflix etc.

I would be shocked if it doesn't.

It's has been a complaint with Sammies in the past. Just checked the menu and there is an option to turn the TV speakers off and use the optical out only but doesn't say anything about being variable.

He needs to use HDMI ARC. Had the same problem until I researched what HDMI ARC was.

i would be willing to bet that soundbar doesn't have HDMI

No idea, my Vizio 5.1 system does and I had the same issue using optical initially. Was so annoying.
Watching my first Bluray through my PS4 and was surprised the smart remote can control the functions without need for the ps4 controller or ps4 remote. Pretty cool functionality there.

I love the "intuity"(?) of the remote, but I hate not being able to use it across the board for all my sources/outputs.

Yeah, if your soundbar doesn't have an HDMI Arc you may be screwed and have to get a new one for that.
Not just regular HDMI, but HDMI Arc(Audio Return Channel) specifically. If you look on the side of your Samsung hub, you will see the output labeled HDMI Arc, you'll plug into that into an HDMI Arc input on your soundbar, and then everything from the TV is sent to the soundbar.
My 2014 Vizio 5.1 system has an HDMI Arc input, so check yours if it's semi-newer.
I could not get optical to work across all sources.
