Recreational Drone Flying in Baton Rouge

Does anyone know anything about flying a drone around Baton Rouge and surrounding areas? I'm particularly concerned about any laws that might be unique to BR or Louisiana. I am going to be receiving a drone soon that I don't want to get in trouble with. I know I have to register it with the FAA which is no problem. Just mainly wanting to know if anyone here has experience with this, and if there are any areas in BR that are drone approved.
I know it shouldn't be flown over people's homes and the FAA gets twisted if you fly over 400 feet. Anyway, anything anyone knows would be helpful. Thanks.

over 400 feet
perhaps you should brush up on all this before you fly around

There's an app which tells you what airports are in the area that you must contact regarding your flying your drone. The problem is that most airports don't have a 'drone hotline' for people to call to meet the objective of the regulation. So, last I checked, all you had to do was call and talk to anyone (the janitor) and tell them you were flying...if you bothered to do that at all.
It's been a while since I read on this so the internetz is your friend.

Best practices: don't overfly people. Don't overfly private property. Always maintain line of sight. Have two landing spots picked out with no people in the path. DON'T FLY WITHIN FIVE MILES OF ANY AIRPORT! Do not overfly government structures or buildings. Have someone with you to act as a spotter for people, aircraft, GEESE (personal experience here). Also, you should not exceed 400 feet above ground level. Also, underestimate your capabilities. Be conservative and respectful of others rights to privacy.

I would suggest getting an app similiar to AirMap. You input your flight location and type (Part 107 vs Recreational). It will tell you if you have to make any particular notifications and give you a contact number. Also if you have your Part 107 license, you can request automated airspace authorization to fly in restricted airspace (around airports) within the app.

I see people flying drones all the time at the State Fair grounds and the Highland Rd. Brec Park.

If someone flies a drone over me, I will generally try to throw something at it. Stupid figs with their drones.

That's a great idea. Thanks.

Hey, now this is some good stuff. This is the kind of information I can't get anywhere else. Thank you. I will check it out.

You should post the address to your trailer park, so I can make sure I don't fly over it.

Sounds like you really need to hook up with other fliers first. BREC has a facility out at Farr Park and there are two RC Clubs in the area. Problem with drones is everybody can easily get one and so very few understand how to use them safely or really even care about safety. Love the stigma they've brought to the community.
If you already have drone, good luck. If you don't, invest $30-$40 in a small quad copter and learn to fly it. While "drones" will have GPS and make flying easy, I do enjoy watching "drone pilots" panic when their GPS/IMU fails and they have no idea what to do.
If you have or will purchase any of the DJI products, pay attention to their software updates. Things change rapidly.

I thought this too until I picked up the P4 and it practically flew itself out of the box..Much easier than a toy

Don't install that shite until its been out for a week

That’s exactly why I recommend learning on the toy. Try flying your P4 in sport mode(without gps). If you can fly the toy, maintaining orientation and stability, you can handle your p4 in a worse case scenario outside of engine failure.

This should help: AirMap.com
