I recall getting one years ago for an older vehicle that didn't have bluetooth audio capabilities and it wasn't very good. Sound seemed to cut in and out frequently

Have you had any luck with any of these products? I'm assuming the tech has improved over the years.

Thanks. Really cheap as well.

I think I'll pull the trigger on that one. Car has a USB port right next to the Aux port in the center console so I should be able to keep it charged that way.

I use this 2 in 1 as a receiver in the car and a transmitter in the house:

how well does the mic work for hands-free phone calling?

debating whether to install that device in my wife's car that integrates bluetooth into the XM menu (involves pulling everything out & connecting into the harness) or something like this.

I use one that is really similar to the two posted. The reviews said that it would only last a year. I think Im on year 3. It works good, I mean it doesnt compare to an integrated unit with a mic up on the ceiling.

Ive never had anyone complain about my voice quality when on the phone, so I dont know how that compares.

Do you need something with a microphone for calls or simply a bluetooth connection?

I use this for plane rides to connect my headphones, but it will work as a transmitter or receiver and it's compact. It can connect to multiple devices at one time as well.

Can you provide an example of what you would recommend?

depends on where your aux port is and if you have an aux port at all.

i think there are a few options here:

1. iSimple makes a $75 kit that splices into your car antenna wire eliminating bluetooth FM trasmitter issues. Its gotten pretty good reviews and includes a little green 'talk' button for your phone. Note this is NOT THE SAME THING as the iSimple device that installs behind your headunit and uses the XM interface (mid 2000s GM vehicles) to add bluetooth to your existing setup. I see alot of mixed reviews of that unit which messes with your display & possibly disables your nav features & stuff. Note you want the unit that includes MICROPHONE for phone calls, not the cheap $25 version.

2. if your vehicle has an aux port on your radio, go with the $15 solution listed second on this thread as that will likely do the trick and the mic is in a pretty good location.

3. if your vehicle only has an aux on your RSE (rear seat entertainment) this is usually in the form of a yellow/red/white input and you'll need to get an adapter cable to 3.5mm female and run that under your center console and install the 3.5mm close to driver and then get the $15 kit from above.

4. FM/bluetooth transmitter. This does an 'ok' job most of the time but its really the weakest of all the solutions and you would probably be better off going with the iSimple solution that splices into your antenna wire but you'll also need to properly ground & find power for that one so its more involved.

What other options are people using?

I use it as a Bluetooth receiver for my iPhone so I've never tried the mic feature.

you don't take phone calls through your car speakers? So you disconnect the device when your phone rings?

I'm sorry, I misunderstood your question. Yes, I'm able to use the car's speakers for phone calls.
