pick you up an open box/amazon warehouse motorola docisis3.

used or new is irrelevant. this is the shittiest part of your technology.

spend the money you save on a kick-arse router.

thats an all-in-one jack-of-all-trades master-of-none

why not $30 motorola docsis 3

then turn around with your savings and get something like this ASUS badass

Asus RT-AC68U

I am partial to ASUS because a dude named RMERLIN has custom firmware that squeeze extra features & power out of those modems & its a 20 second install to swap out the existing firmware.

I don't have anything bad to say about other routers, but I personally am most familiar with ASUS and it offers some great features and a sweet UI.

eta i have that modem and it works great with comcast. the 100mbps speed i get now show up as BLUE LEDs instead of GREEN on the front of the modem.

other than that, i just turn that fricker on and forget about it.

if you 'lease' the modem from comcast, the bastards turn on a 'guest network' by default so guess who gets data charges when the neighbors start sucking free WiFi off your router?

NO THANK YOU

You are definitely better off with a separate modem and router than a combo model.

4. Decide if you want a modem/router combination. If you’ve started looking at modems, you’ll notice that you can buy a combination modem/router that serves both purposes from a single box. This might seem like a good idea, as there are fewer wires, less clutter, and simpler setup. However, I’d caution against choosing this option if given the choice. Why? Because it limits your flexibility. If you choose to upgrade your wireless router, you’ll need to replace the entire device and get a new modem as well. Many modem/router combinations pack solid stats both in the modem and the router, but there are all sorts of reasons why you might want to upgrade your wireless router; faster speeds, more ports, better security — and doing that is much easier and cheaper when you have a separate router

what bandwidth are you using and the wifi cable modems suck, don't do it. I had a Zoom one and the range was terrible.

So the general consensus is buy a separate modem and router. The link above had good info.

What should I look for in a router? House is 2300sq fr

This is what I use btw, and it rocks:

ARRIS

Building upon the success of the SB6121, SB6141 and SB6183 Arris Surfboard Cable modems the SB6190 enhances your personal media experience, at lightning-fast broadband speed. It harnesses the power of DOCSIS 3.0 technology to bond up to thirty two downstream channels and eight upstream channels--providing you advanced multimedia services with data rates up to 1.4 Gbps download and 131 Mbps upload depending on your Cable Internet provider service. That makes streaming HD Video, gaming, shopping, downloading, working, high-quality voice and video conferencing, and peer-to-peer networking applications far more realistic, faster, and efficient than ever before. 2 year warranty.
