I always thought that printer companies sell printers cheap so they can make money on the ink
They do, and I don't have a problem with the razor blade model if the pricing is reasonable. But speaking of unreasonable, here is something else I just learned about my printer:
quote:

A proposed class action alleges HP has intentionally failed to disclose to consumers that its OfficeJet printers use substantial amounts of color ink when printing black and white images and text
That explains why my colors run out so fast even though I very rarely print color. Again, frick HP.

HP gets hit with class action suits all the time, mostly related to 3rd party cartridges not working. And then they settle for like $1 million and keep doing it.

so I could understand their not taking kindly to 3rd party vendors undercutting them on the ink
I get that, I really do. But IMO the solution to the "problem" of competition should be to provide more value, not less.

I think all the big manufacturers have done it at some point. I'm looking into the Brother INKvestment line or a color laser I guess.

Why not hp?

The company sucks and their printers suck.
HP sucks really bad. HP LaserJet printers use the same xerographic laser-marking engines sourced from Canon, but while Canon has built a great reputation for their firmware, drivers, software, and well-built cabinets, HP fricks it all up with HP's own crappy firmware, drivers, software, cheap cabinetry and cheaply made ink cartridges.

under no circumstances get an inkjet. They use up ink when "cleaning" the print head. You can print zero pages and ink will run out.

Also the wonderful inkjet printers won't print if one of the color cartridges is empty. You can't print black even if the black cartridge is FULL.

Oh, and it uses the small color cartridge to "clean" the print head.

Final bit of fun is that you can't buy the single color cartridge. You have to buy the full color / black pack.

So.... frick inkjets.

Maybe this is just specific to brother but I will never even think about an inkjet ever again and nobody should. You will get fewer pages per ink cartridge and probably not even remotely close. Get a cheap laser.
