I got an ATT wireless modem about six months ago and ATT said it did not want it back, so I can I use that modem with other stuff?

No (another carrier won't support a modem they didn't give you or isn't on their authorized equipment list), but what's the point? The next company you sign up with is going to give you another one. Or, see what is on the next company's approved list and buy one off of Amazon or eBay.

I figured that was most likely the case, but I just wanted to see if I or a friend ever needed a modem for whatever reason, I could have one as a backup so it wouldn't interrupt any service.

AT&T just sent me a new modem to replace the rather aged BGW210 gateway...

They don't want it back so I dissembled it looking to see if I could easily extract the firmware from onboard flash to potentially modify for re-purposing, doesn't appear to the case. Most useful bit inside might be the heatsinks and 2.4Ghz antenna (external antenna for an ESP32 project ??)
