Funny y'all should mention the Precision line, for graphic designers I recommend the desktops, usually rock solid and fast. The only issue I had was when they switched from HD's to SSD's they used Intel's, great brand, or so I thought, in the first year 3 failed, thank God for backups.

But the boss wanted a Precision notebook for presentations, it had several issues before it settled down.

i really want my next laptop to last me at least 5 or 6 years (if not more). that's why I'm a little anal about future proofing it as much as possible and trying to really get one w/ great specs, so that it'll have longevity

You should take a look at Framework laptops. They are the first laptops from the ground up that are designed for both DIY repair and upgrades. I bought one last year and love it. It's nice knowing that if something fails, I can replace and fix it myself.

When Framework first started, the original version was sold with an 11th gen Intel mainboard. Today, those same people can upgrade their mainboard to various versions of 12th or 13th gen Intel. Or they could even switch to AMD Ryzen series 7000 CPUs. No need to get new chasis, display panel, battery etc.

They announced a new 16" model that comes out later this year. The kicker is it has a discrete & upgradable gpu.
