We've been using Quickbooks Basic 2002 for years. Does what we need it to do, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Well the hard drive crashed and I had to reinstall it. Luckily I still had the CD ROM. A dialog box popped up "you have 15 free uses after which you have to register to continue using this product," So I call them to register. The lady tells me they stopped supporting this version years ago and they have no way to register it any more.

Is there any way around this without buying the latest version? I can just leave it running but I have to reboot from time to time and eventually I will run out of the 15 free uses.

But it is broken, really badly.

What OS is this machine running? XP? Vista? Win7? Best case it's running Win7 in which case standard support ended for it nearly 5 years ago which means it probably hasn't had a security update in that time. Jesus.

If the biz is so small that you can't get off the $35/mo or whatever for QBO, then switch to something like Wave for free accounting.

Just stop doing critical business operations on a frickin' honeypot.

Computer is never connected to the internet and only has QB on it. The only way for it to be hacked is if someone has physical access to it and I'm willing to take that risk for the convenience. At any rate, problem solved as per above post.

the convenience
It's going to be really inconvenient and costly when that computer finally kicks the bucket and then you can't find another computer old enough to run a version of Windows old enough to run a version of Quickbooks old enough to open your old-arse company file. Do you even know what that process will be like? I don't, but it doesn't sound fun.

And what's convenient about having to use a specific computer for your accounting anyway? That sounds like a huge pain.

And what are you backing up your company file to? A USB drive? Are you very careful about that attack vector?

Windows 10 and 11 will run old software by using capatabilty mode when installing. I run Quicken 2008 with no issues at all. You can pick previous versions of Windows XT, 7, 8, etc ..

Compatibility mode has been hit or miss for me when I've tried it. I would love to know if QuickBooks 2002 will run on Windows 10.

You can also run it in a virtual machine. I was going to send the OP my registration code, but he already found his by the time I found mine.

Welp, I guess this being the tech board I shouldn't be surprised that you guys would cover the various hoops that you can technically jump through to keep running software that's two decades out of date.

I guess as I keep getting older, I am more pragmatic with solutions than I used to be. I'll stand firm that the most sensible thing (and least costly in the long term) for OP to do is to switch to more modern accounting software. If your needs are basic, there are several free options (like Wave) that are really easy to use and allow you access from any device.
