Ok, I currently have an Xbox One S and am investigating getting a Nvidia Shield TV device. We are a cord cutting family but I have the following questions:

1) Can I download purchased movies (like Coco) directly to my Xbox One S Plex app? I don't think so since I think the Xbox Plex app is client only.
2) Can I download purchased movies (like Coco) directly to the Nvidia Shield TV since it has a server and client?
3) Can I download those movies from my Amazon Prime account, where I purchased it?
4) Do I even need to do this since I have ATTs 1gb internet and don't currently have data caps?

If the answer to 4 is "no", then what's even the point of plex other than to centralize home videos, pictures and some downloaded content? Seems like every home media streamer does this already.

if you want to convert your home library of DVDs and BD to online so you don't have to worry about scratching disks and losing them, etc. plex is the way to go.

you can also put your home movies and photos & music library on there.

I hear ya. Most of the media we've purchased has already been ported over to Amazon Video or we simply stream our music through phones to Sonos, etc.
It appears I am not the ideal candidate for Plex. So having Plex on the Nvidia Shield does not seem to be a plus for me. That is, unless ATT throttles me or implements data caps and overages on their 1gb plan.

However, I am still curious if I can download my purchased movies from Amazon or Vudu directly to my Xbox and/or Nvidia Shield? My guess is... no, but that would be nice.

i can say with almost 100% certainty they have that stuff encypted so if you cancel your subscription it no longer works..and doubt it would show up in plex although it would be nice if it did.

You can also hook up your antenna connection through plex as well to watch your locals anywhere

You could probably download the purchase movies onto an external hard drive to then play from with your Xbox.

Plex is just so nice with how it organizes everything for you and if you have a lot of content.

Do you not have a home computer to run your own server off of?

It doesn’t sound like plex is really for you though. Someone with a plex media library can always add you as a friend and share their server/content with you,

I'm a newb to this Plex stuff but I downloaded Coco (through Vudu and Amazon Prime Video) on my phone but could not get plex on phone, laptop or Xbox to recognize it.

Windows 10 does not have a native Amazon Prime Video app that you can use to download your purchased movies. Unsure about Vudu. I think the problem seems to be that these content providers encrypt or put DRM type stuff on each purchase so that you can't do exactly what I'm looking for. I could understand Netflix putting that on movies that I didn't purchase but I literally bought the UHD version of Coco through Vudu.

The good news, for me, is that Plex seems virtually useless as we put all of our home videos and pics on Google Photos and every other movie we have a digital copy that can be downloaded or streamed from Amazon Video or Vudu. It just doesn't seem all that useful for me and my family.

ETA: That is unless my ISP (ATT) begins to put caps, throttling or charges on their 1gb speed plan. Currently there is none but that doesn't mean there won't be in the future. Then I've gotta figure out this plex dilemma.

I think we are getting an influx of people getting upset with Kodi and how shitty the streaming channels are and because Kodi and Plex are technically both media servers, they think Plex is the answer to Kodi, when it isnt.

True. Has that happened for you a lot though? With ATT in New Orleans, I've maybe been without the internet 2x in the last 5 years.
