Left to my own devices, I'll just try and configure it with the most advanced parts, but that may or may not be needed, so I figured I'd run it by you guys because you'll definitely know which direction to go. Here are the tech specs provided by the school:
Here was the first thing I put together at Dell, though I had bumped it up to 64 GB memory and the 1 TB SSD drive. Total comes to around $2600, but there will be a discount, etc.
LINK
Looking at it compared to the specs, my only issues are with the video card and specifically the video card memory and the USB slots. I THINK this card is well beyond the requirements, but the memory seems to be on the low end. This a problem or no? Also, I'm assuming there can be an adaptor for older version USB connections using the ones here?
Thanks in advance!!

You need more storage

What about something like this?
Bumps it up to the GeForce 3060 6GB, 64 GB DDR4 3200 mhz and a 2 TB SSD?
LINK
ETA: Why the need for more storage though? I saw the specs for the addition 1 TB HDD, but I just assumed that could be accomplished with an external drive if need be since the specs suggested it was plus the SSD.
Was there something in the software listed that needed the additional storage on board?

that seems like a really strong machine, not sure on price competitiveness though

That part I really have no clue about. Found the receipt for my first PC purchase a few months back from Gateway back in 1999 (I'll need to scan it just for the laughs) which cost a staggering $3600. Since then, it's been Dells every time I've needed to replace my PC. Did build a gaming system with this same son 2 Christmases ago, but building a laptop is completely beyond me.
Where else to look for laptops like this? Other companies allow you to customize parts like this? Stupid question I'm sure, but this is out of my element which is why I'm asking you guys.

Check out the Lenovo ThinkPads. I use an X1 Carbon as my daily workhorse.
I can pull plans on-site easily. Also, it's built like a tank.

+1 on Lenovo. Definitely worth every single penny

Thanks for the suggestion both of you. Best place to buy one? Straight from Lenovo?
What do you guys think of these two? Only difference in the 2 that I can see is the memory. Less expensive one has 32 GB DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16 GB) and the more expansive one has 64 GB DDR4 3200MHz (4 x 16 GB). Based on the tech specs I provided above and the programs it'll be running, is that addition RAM worth the extra money?
LINK
ETA: Also noticed the lesser one has an 11th Gen i-9 Processor versus the i-7 in the more expensive one. Thoughts?

Both are great. I have an I-7.
Lenovo is currently running a half off sale at their website by the way.

Yeah, saw that. Ran into a snag, because both systems I'm interested in have a FOUR MONTH+ delivery time apparently. They're put together overseas and, you know... Which really sucks now, 'cause you guys sold me on this system/brand!

He needs it for the start of the Spring semester, so I'm looking for alternative laptops for the time being while this one comes in. While I've bought a bunch of Dells, every one of the laptops I've bought has ended up with hinge issues within two years, and the one I'm looking at looks plenty powerful, but also looks as fragile as a glass Christmas ornament.
Anyone know of a place where you can rent fairly high powered laptops like you can college books? Looking for something for maybe half the semester while we wait for this one to come in if I end up ordering it. If I'm going to spend $3000+ on a system I'd prefer it be the one that's best for his needs.
Thanks guys.

late to the thread - i bought my daughter a Surface when she started college a couple years ago from costco, added the 4 year extra warranty and scheduled it on my home insurance since i was 100% sure she going to leave it behind in a classroom and it would be stolen.
3 years later she still has it and loves it. the only thing i've had to do so far is buy a new charging cable since she broke the other one.
eta she's an art major
so she had to install adobe creative suite & some other cpu intensive apps and it runs everything great.
