Not sure how long it will last, but if you go on Amazon and find the LightStrip sold by Philips and select standard packaging, you can buy up to 3 strips for 49 each. Frustration free packaging is still 89 each. I think they are just phasing out their old packaging

What else do you need for this to work? Is a hub required? Or can it just be plugged in and controlled by your phone?

you need a hub to change colors but you can find them for $30 or so on ebay all the time. dont let the hub be a barrier to getting the lightstrip if you want it.
