Philip Hue Lights and Strips

I’m about to do the whole damn house but wanted some suggestions before I pull the trigger.
1) I need like 90 feet of LED strip. Is this the way to go? At about $12/ft is there a better option?
2) Are the white ambiance lights any good? I hear they aren’t that bright. I’m not sure I want to pay $30/ bulb for a dim light.
3) Is it worth to just spend the extra $10/bulb more to get the full color bulbs?
Is there any other alternative or competitor I should look into?

I have about 45 hue lights throughout my house. BR30s, A19s, and lightstrips. I don't have any white ambiance bulbs all color, primarily because like you say, for an extra 10 or so bucks you get a better product.
I wouldn't bother with competitors, Hue pretty much sets the standard for smart bulbs.
As for lightstrip alternatives...there was a thread about a week ago on here about a way to make your own for much cheaper than the hue strip, and it would be compatible with hues hub.

I own 4 of the white ambiance lights and I have no complaints about the bulbs themselves. I would just ante up and get the color bulbs instead if I had to do it again. The color bulbs offer more functionality, and that desire for color bulbs will grow on you as you accumulate more lights across the house. I do have a handful of the $15 bulbs stuck in lamps near beds, or places where theme lighting isn't a big deal. Those are good to consider during your planning.
Keep an eye on deals for starter kits. You can score 4 color bulbs plus a bridge in a starter kit for less than buying the individual 4 color bulbs from time-to-time. There will be a number of deals coming up this holiday season if you have time to wait.

I have color Phillips hue bulbs they are just as bright as regular bulbs also look for deals on black Friday

Report back because I’m not paying $1200 for fricking LED strips. I think I’m going to wait on until Black Friday for the bulbs. They are $40/bulb now until Sunday which isn’t terrible. Does anyone know what they paid during Black Friday? I think I need about 30.

I’ve had great luck on Facebook marketplace/Craigslist for people who either got a pack as a gift or who decides they weren’t using them. Scored 4 color bulbs, two blooms and a remote for $120 total. Another time got 18 of the plain white bulbs for $100. Have gotten 3 Google Home minis for $20 a piece. Got two nest outdoor cams for $100 total. Keep an eye out there to really add to your smart home

I have a set of the cheap Amazon strips from that thread work ok but does not have the color range of hue

I also have a variety of Hue bulbs in my house. Never had a concern of brightness of the whites.

Never once have I said "I wish I had more light in this room". When they are set to soft white you wouldn't know the difference

Not really. Depending on what you want to do, though, there are some light bars being released on Nov. 1 that may fit what you want to do better.

The white ambiance lights should perform very similarly in the white spectrum to the white and color ambiance. I'd imagine they have the same LEDs for the white spectrum. The white dimmable LED lights absolutely DO NOT perform as well as the white ambiance. Don't be tempted to try to cheap out. The dimmable bulbs do not dim nearly as much as the ambiance bulbs. My bathrooms have motion sensors and automatic lighting. After 10 pm, the lights come on with nightlights to avoid blinding people half asleep. The dimmable bulbs were terrible at it. I threw those away and just replaced them with white and color ambiance. Besides, being able to do dim red light after bedtime is way better for not blasting your eyes if you have to pee at 3 am. Basically, if the bulb looks roundish like a regular light bulb, stay away. You want the bulbs that are flattish on the end.

Yes. What you can do with full color bulbs is truly spectacular. My living room goes full movie theater lighting with the dim red lighting around the perimeter and the ceiling with the lightstrip behind the TV for bias lighting when I want to watch TV or play video games. Plus, the home automation things you can think up with the colored lights can be awesome. For instance, about 15 minutes before I leave for work, I have a HA routine that runs and checks the weather. If the chance of rain is high enough, it turns the foyer light blue so I know to grab my umbrella, then it automatically sets the color normal and turns it off about 15 minutes after I leave. If you can think of it and have some programming chops or use available tools, you can do some truly cool things with lighting.

No. Philips Hue is the big swinging dick in the customizable lighting world.

What information do you have on these? Are they Hue Bars? Can you point me in the right direction?

I’m trying to uplight a ceiling. It’s 22 feet on two sides and 18 on the other two sides. How many of these play bars would I need? How can you tell the coverage?

That looks nice, still really expensive.
Nice that you can connect up to 3 with only one power cord, though (would need minimum of two, but 3 would be the best for behind a tv to be comparable to a light strip)

Sorry, man, can't help you there. I don't have any experience with them and they haven't even been released yet, so other than Philips press kits, we've not seen anyone in the wild using them. They seem like they wouldn't be able to evenly uplight that much space though.
Maybe ask over on the Hue subreddit.
