whats best way to block websites and stuff like that on a childs phone, preferably something that can be done remotely.

turning on Screen Time and setting Content & Privacy restrictions is the easiest way.

First, never let the kid jailbreak the phone/iPad.
Next, you *cannot* approve the installation of any VPN apps. Everyone that has a phone in school does this to get around content blocking (my kid sent the request I think his first week in sixth grade). Parents often enable parental controls, but then don't actually understand what the app they're approving is, and how it foils their goals. Which is of course, intentional.
Finally, if you try to use an app to do this blocking, over and above the built in parental controls, always search YouTube for "how to disable" the program you're thinking of, including how to fool location tracking. The ex-wife of course bought an app that got pitched to her on social media buy the really, nice helpful ladies in her friend group as the be-all end all. Yet, teenagers created videos of how to disable or fool the software are all over the place. She clearly shouldn't take my word for it, not like I do IT security for a living.

Yeah, screen time has a lot of options to filter out things that you may not want and time limits

And, be cognizant that other kids will happily hand your kid their phone/tablet to let them look at shite you don't want them to see.
