Oppo site
While I doubt it impacts many of you, the lose of Oppo sux for people into HT. Thier optical disc players of every sort have been state of the art for years at a price that was extremely reasonable. This is going to leave an interesting hole in the market.

Sad. I recently bought the lower-level UHD player and it provides an awesome picture.

Dammit! I was holding off on buying one of their 4K players.

They will still be around for a short while (assuming speculators don't jump on them for resell). If I wasn't already covered I would buy one.
I guess making smart phones is more profitable than universal optical disc players.

Do you think this is the beginning of the end of optical discs? Because streaming....

I’ve got (2) BD103 players and (2) BD203 4K players in th house. They really are hard to beat for the money.

Well, we know the day will come and I won't lament it BUT the physical media is still better than streaming at this point both on the audio and video side. I don't want physical media to die until streaming is able to match it at present the majority of current 4K streaming leaves a lot to be desired compared to a 1080p Bluray.
Oppo was still a niche product in a niche market and their phones may have taken their attention away from high quality universal players.
If the vast majority of homes in the US could get Gigabit internet then we would probably get full bandwidth UHD and full bandwidth multi-channel audio.

On the video side they are basically impossible to beat at any price. They made some subtle gaffs on the audio side with the UHD players but it is unlikely anyone actually hears it without being told it is there beforehand.

I am only using mine for video playback...and yeah, the video is superb.
The audio CDs are either played on a Simaudio Supernova or the McIntosh transport/DAC.

This issue is on UHD Bluray playback as well. Again as much a theoretical issue as not.
A lot of people were unhappy that the UHD players didn't support apps but it never bothered me but that and their near total silence at CES this year was handwriting on the wall even if many didn't see it. This is also the end of the Cambridge UHD player based on the Oppo.

I am familiar with the player and it's quirks, software updates, DV issues (or lack there of in some cases—spelled Sony)—-I’ve been reading the mega thread on AVS for over a year now (all 27,000+ posts).
I still use the BD-103 in the bedrooms as it streams Netflix, while the newer BD-203 doesn’t have it built in, and I really don’t want to add another input device (trying to keep it simple).
I have the BD-203 running to a 4K projector in one room and to a Sony A1E OLED in another.

I think the fact that Sony, with their UBP-X800 and UBP-X700 have significantly closed the gap with Opportunity in upscaling capabilities, and unlike Oppo, snd they include streaming apps. However, what's most baffling is the lack of Sony's PlayStation Vue app on any of their UHD players. For that matter, even more baffling is their lack of a UHD player on their PS4.

I think if you are looking for the "next best thing" to the Oppo players I would look at the Panasonic UB900 over the US Sony offerings.

I wish it was a hoax. Glad I bought my 203 over the holidays. I had the 103 before that. I read on other forums that people are buying new 203/205s as backups for the future. So act fast if you're thinking of buying one. I'm glad to hear that Oppo will still continue to do firmware updates.
While I get it's hard to beat streaming for the convenience, I can still see a big difference with discs especially since they all have HDR. Also, it's rare for streaming to support the newer lossless audio formats.
I hope another company will jump in and fill this segment. Maybe another small/upstart company like Emotiva.
Also, I could care less if the Oppo or other players support streaming apps. I prefer to have a dedicated streaming device which is constantly updated.

This is terrible news for AV nerds like us that love searching for that perfect near reference quality player. Like you, I have multiple Oppo’s in the house. 205 in the theater, 203 in the living room, and 105D in the bedroom (used to be the reference player before the UHD line came out.) They are simply the best and I hope someone can fill the void.
Saw someone mention the Sony and Panny. I had both of those UHD players over the course of the last 18 months and while they are both solid, neither could replace the 203 and of 205. I had really high expectations for the new Sony to see how it would pair with my native Sony 4k projector (675es), but it got sent back after a 2 week audition.
While the 203 certainly has had issues, Oppo’s customer service is near god tier....something that wouldn’t ever happen with Sony, Panny, Samsung, etc.
I also hope this doesn’t mean they will quit making things like headphones and portable amps. Oppo’s PM3’s are my go to travel headphones. Great set of cans!

How long have you had the 675? I had one in my primary residence theater for about 3 weeks and could not take the posterization. That along with the continued reports of panel degradation (even on the 4/5 layer fixed versions) made my choice. We log about 1800 hrs per year on each projector and while I was willing to risk panel degradation the posterization killed it for me, especially on a 15K PJ. I replaced it with the JVC 990 and have been happy, at least until JVC comes out with a cheaper version of the 4500.
