Please don't get anything older than an iPhone 5s. My iPhone 5 which I gave to my mother is already struggling on iOS 9. iPhone 5c has the same internals as the iPhone 5. So I'd go for something 5s and after. More over the 5s has a 64-bit architecture, so it is more future proof. I am seeing more and more apps drop support for 32-bit iPhones.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm running a 4s still. It's perfect for me. It's been very fast on web browsers, video, etc. No problems texting or calling. I have a lot of memory shortage issues but I dont take a ton of pics, so really I just have to manage my apps and avoid downloading IOS updates (they take up an insane amount of memory)
Edit: and i charge the phone once a day, twice if I'm doing a lot on it that day

I don't think I would buy a 5c unless it's a certified refurb. That plastic back doesn't hold up well. I would go with a 5 over a 5c

Yeah, I was referring to Swappa or CL. A used 5/5c goes for about 150-175 depending on the carrier, but the 4s still goes for 100-130

If you 4s hold outs are happy, maybe just change the battery. That being said I still think the 3.5 year timeline I laid out is reasonable for most people. I was pretty surprised the 4s got included in the iOS 9 update. Based on previous update patterns I was expecting it to not be supported.

Yeah, I have a 4s on my nightstand right now. I meant to sell it last year, but got lazy. I think I'll just keep it as an emergency backup now.

I used to use it as a remote for my apple TV but now I just use my 6s plus
