Official WINK HUB Home Automation thread

OK it's time. I just installed the app and it looks like GE and Quirky have their act together and are fixing the horrible launch and cloud issues. This still seems to be the horse to hitch your smart home wagon to if they can work out the kinks and disastrous initial PR.
So far it's nice to see my 2 thermostats in the app.. Actually haven't bought the hub yet so it's nice to be able to add things to the android app just by creating an account.
Fwiw I have 2 inexpensive Honeywell wifi stats and wink actually just gets to the Honeywell api by granting it permissions. Advantage is the nicer UI to control it, everything in one app and the robots you can configure (ie macros) to link the behavior of the stats to other events like proximity turning lights on when you are close to your house and changing stat temps.
You can get a hub and 2 ge WiFi lights for $49 in store at home depot right now.
Or you can go to wink.com and get a free wink hub if you buy any wink device and spend over $75.
That's a good deal say if you're looking at a WiFi garage door opener to get the hub for free.

Oh forgot that I set up shortcuts in the WINK android app to my Honeywell WiFi thermostats and now I can control them from my watch!
The robots are also cool. Right now I set them to email me when I arrive home but you could really have them set the thermostats or turn the lights on or open the garage door.
This is fun and very easy!

Got my proximity robots going off now.. Not so good is you go for a walk like I just did because the notifications went off about 10x but you can set it to only go off at certain times.. Like arriving home from work in the evenings.
It definitely goes off early enough for the garage door to be open by the time I hit the driveway.
This is very cool.. Hope they get the bugs worked out.
I'm really starting to see the advantage of all my shite integrated into a single app.
I'm starting to get it and the android wear integration was the icing on the cake.

bump
HUB teardown
Wink Hub Radios
you can see a bunch of the radios they support on the board; WiFi, BT, Lutron, Z-wave, etc.
- hub is super cheap - lots of deals going on where the hub is either free or $20 if you buy a couple of wifi lightbulbs. worth getting it to play with it at that price.
- works with android wear
- supports lots of radio technologies- lutron, zigsbee, z-wave, WiFi, bluetooth, kiddie..granted i dont know what all those are it supports a TON
- **ROOTABLE** yes kids thats right, this thing is rootable at the moment..as long as you don't let it connect to the internet & download the firmware update first. this root access is removed in the updated firmware so you gotta root it before you do anythying else
- robots & shortcuts - shortcuts are little toggles you can setup and control from you WEAR (see pic above) like 'turn heater on' or 'turn all my thermostats off'
- robots on the other hand, take shortcuts or things you set up and string together in a macro..like 'at 5 pm turn the heat up and the lights on and open the garage door'
- proximity built in! this is very cool..i set up a robot to notify me when i arrive home..i get the notifiation on my watch and in email about 2 houses away from mine. So cooL! you can set a proximity robot to open the garage door & turn the lights inside on & junk when you get home.
- so far the easy win for devices are:
--> the honeywell thermostats i bought work BEAUTIFUL (via api)
--> garage door opener (myQ) that will work with any existing garage door
--> those $15 GE WiFi lightbulbs.
Best part is the one app to 'rule them all'! while the myQ and honeywell websites and apps do some of this stuff..having WINK tie into this, you only need the one APP and you can use robots and shortcuts to tie everything together!
so very cool stuff..i encourage you to try it out..espeically now while the hub is so cheap and hackable

i talked my FiL into a few as well as some friends here.
here's the cool thing: you set up the stats with the honeywell app..but you can also register them with the wink app and get all of the functionality of the honeywell app..but they'll be in the wink 'ecosystem' as you add more things.
no need to buy a hub to do that..wink app is free so you can try it out and see if you like it.

i can help you with the honeywells..i freaking love mine already.
i had a robot 'turn the heat on' yesterday based on walking to my house (took new baby for a walk) and it was really cool to see it actually happen.

So what do I need the hub for? I want to do the lights and garage door.

i dont think either of those things. the hub is a master control that works with the various 'radios' out there..z wave, bluetooth, zigsbee, etc.
since both the chamberlain myQ and honeywells have allowed API access to WINK's app..neither of those 2 devices require the physical hub.
eta you need it for the lighbulbs..sorrry i thought you said thermostat and garage door.
the lightbulbs are z-wave i think.
but $20 for the hub tho

Black Friday bump. Verizen stores carrying the Chamberlain myq garage door system (for any garage door) for $99 which is $30 off the normal $129 price on Friday.

it is also $99 at Target and Best Buy right now.

Perfect!! I have an open baby registry at target that I get 15% off whatever I add to it. Add 5% for the red card and we're looking at $79 for this thing. Right in my sweet spot.

Does the myq still have that annoying alarm prior to closing the garage door?

I don't know what I'm looking at and my brain hurts. It wants to understand but can't.

Re: myq, yes it makes beeps in case you're closing it remotely and someone is in the garage.. It's a warning. You can still use your existing garage doorbell button when you are going inside. Myq works with your existing setup.
Poo: those are all the radios on the wink board.. Wifi Bluetooth zwave etc. It supports about 7 or 8 different radio technologies for stuff to talk to it.

Target also has the schlage lock! With the discount off that $200 it comes in at $160!
