Equipment cost would be $179.00. At $14.99 a month, calculated over the same 2 year period, total cost = $538.76.
If using ths promotion at $19.99 a month * 24 = $479.76
So, you could save $59.00 over two year's time. Either way, $59 isn't a big deal.

Finally got the final piece of my FUCable up and running and the chord has been cut. Now have my backend server running Windows Media Center and my pvr client on Kodi (FireTV box). My tuner is a Homerun Dual tuner and I get 60 some odd channels over the air. I mainly record the local news to watch in bed at night. I have found the Sportsdevil addon to KODI to be the channels I watch most. Im able to watch all the Dodgers games and the upcoming Snooker World Championship. If I were a soccer fan I would never leave the house....any soccer game on tv anywhere you can find on sportsdevil. Too bad I am a straight guy.

hey guys. have chromecast and kodi, et al. thank you for the help there. am about to pull the trigger on slingtv. should I go with roku streaming stick or amazon fire stick (free promo?). I see where I can use kodi on firestick but not sure with roku stick. Also, would like to use my older laptop with windows media center to set up a dvr component. Any help would be appreciated!

I would get a fire tv over the stick. My stick freezes up a lot.

Get the FireTV...the promo has an option for $50 off firetv so it would run you $40 or so....you will need to run a Cat5/6 cable to the firetv.
As for the dvr, Kodi 13.x and 14.x has a WMC client included, you just need to enable it. But first get WMC working on your laptop and connected to your tuner or cable. Then install the WMC pvr Host... Follow this Guide.

thank you for the help! so, the laptop does not have the largest hard drive, but I have an external hd that has plenty of room. any advice on setting up the external hd with the laptop and wm? i have plenty of cat 5 cables for the setup. should you like to drop me an email off line, your medical rep at yahoo.

Just called AT&T and cancelled my U-Verse service. My roommate is barely ever home anymore and I maybe watch TV once a week, so not worth the money anymore. I'll be saving a total of about $50/mo since they also took away my internet discount (they did give me another promotion on the internet so that's good, I got to upgrade my interwebs for no extra cost)
For the next couple of months I'll be sticking to my Chromecast, but I plan on using the money I'll be saving and to buy an Amazon FireTV to run Kodi. Once football season comes around I'll probably look into either ordering an antenna, or using sling.com.

If the external HD is connected to the laptop then it will be fine. When you set up the WMCserver it asks you to tell it where the recordings will be stored. You can go into WMC settings and set the path to a folder on the Ext. HD and tell WMCServer thats where to look.

You need to load Sportsdevil into Kodi....to load (push) stuff onto the FireTV, including Kodi, I use ADBFire. There are other ways to sideload stuff but this is the easiest IMO. The only difficulty is sometimes it is tough to find the installation zip file of something you just "pushed" to the FireTV. I have this problem with all methods of pushing I have tried.
There are "repositories" or collections of various apps (tv channels and movies) that are available. LINK
20 best addons
You should install Genesis for sure. I watch stuff on genesis and sportsdevil 90% of the time.

Are their any viable options that would also appease us married guys and our wives?
So someone tell me how I can ditch ATT Uverse TV and get:
1) Local Channels - Get an HD Antenna, easy
2) Disney/Disney JR for the little one - Sling TV subscription?
3) DVR to record shows on local channels - unsure?
4) Anyway to play recorded shows on any TV in the house - unsure?
5) Sports channels like ESPN - Sling TV Subscription?
What really confuses me is points #3 and #4. Any suggestions for us idiots?

For points 3 and 4, look into TiVo OTA. It definitely covers 3. I don't think it will do 4.
Tablo, Channel Master, and Simple.tv also make products that will do what you're asking. Tablo runs $5/mo for guide data. Channel master doesn't make you pay for guide data, but also doesn't stream to other parts of the house (they tout its comparability with the Slingbox 500 ($230-300ish, depending if you like refurb or search better than I do). Simple.TV had a rocky start, but their newer models seem to have been better. I think they use an annual vs lifetime subscription Of $60 vs $150, respectively.
So out of these, the simplest answer is a 2 tuner Tablo for ~$200 +$5/mo (for the guide data...which way beats TiVo's $15/mo option that won't stream your hard drive's content to the devices in your house).
Of course, any of these will do 4 if you add a device such as a Slingbox. Its an added cost that's not particularly necessary.
On the more tech-y side, an HTPC running windows, OS X, or Linux with either xbmc or MythTV should do the trick. That's an entire long, drawn out discussion in and of itself. I'd decide "stand alone vs HTPC." If you dislike tinkering, standalone is almost definitely the better option. I haven't used them, but I'd expect cable-box-like function and reliability. With a computer, you'll have more initial headache + the potential problem of software updates not making things work right. But, you will be able to do exactly what you want, and it's undeniably the most customizable.

I use Windows Media Center on my computer as a server and stream it to Kodi on an Amazon Firetv (connected to my tv). It is a bit technical to set up but works great. Hopefully, HomerunTV will have their dvr on the market sooner rather than later. Homerun makes a great tv dual tuner I use too.

5) Sports channels like ESPN - Sling TV Subscription?
Probably the easiest.....but Kodi has all the sports channels....again, Kodi is not the simplest to use. I watched the Dodgers choke away another win last night on Kodi.

Again, Sling is easiest....Kodi has disney and everything else. Be aware Sling TV can only be watched on one device at a time. So if junior is watching disney, dad cant watch espn.

Yea, I read that on reviewing SlingTV recently. That's an absolute deal breaker to me.
3 people in 1 house with 3 TV's and only getting to watch tv on 1? Not good.
How 1st world of a problem is that? Oh well.

Just put Zeus Video on kodi. Pretty sweet repo. Best since Mashup IMO
