how bad can it get? It appears to be getting worse with an average of 2mphs Download and less than 1 upload speed.
What the hell am I paying for? $50+ for this shitty service.
Is there ANY hope of improvement in the area or should I just go ahead and make the switch to Cox?

I'd switch to cox, though I don't know how the infrastructure is around there either. The problem with U-verse is it's not a consistent type of service everywhere. Some areas have fiber to the premises, and others just have fiber to the node (99.9% likely to be the case here). When it's fiber to the node, your service will vary based on your distance from the VRAD and the quality of the copper carrying the signal. Distance is the first detriment, and determines whether you have VDSL (better but distance-sensitive) or ADSL2+ (dog shite). Also, AT&T tries to use the existing copper lines (from the days of landlines and such) to cost-effectively connect as many homes as possible, and this doesn't bode well for old neighborhoods/residences.

I've got whatever the AT&T internet here is in midcity BR (It's labeled as Uverse) and we're at <1mbps. We just called yesterday to switch to COX, can't handle living with AOL speeds anymore for $42/month. Coming next week is $49.99 for 50mbps for 12 months...

I just called U-verse today to tell them to lower my bill or I am leaving. 45 Mbps from U-verse that gets up to 49 at times in Metairie, never below 42. Lowest they could offer was $73/month. Cox's promotion was 50Mbps for $60/month. I told them both are equal for me in speed and quality, and I am just picking the lowest price since I canceled cable. I was put on hold for 3 minutes and was told if I bundled it with a landline then they could do $59.95/month total. So they won by 5 cents then threw in $42 off for each of the first 3 months. They are sending me a box to plug in for the landline and I don't have to deal with someone coming to set things up.
