What’s a good laptop for around $300 or $400 for a college freshman? TIA

ETA: is MS Office still essential for college kids?

At that market point you are pretty much at the absolute bottom of functionality. If your college freshman has any need for anything other than typing reports, you need to spend a few hundred more. If basic typing is all you need, it really doesn't matter what you get.

Check with the college to see what they recommend. I did this so that my freshman could have the best experience with blackboard and so forth.

I would imagine campus use google docs, which is free to use, but I’m not sure.

If this is your price range look into a refurbished MacBook

LSU and most other universities offer all the software for free or very cheap. Don’t buy retaill.

They may have deals with Dell for cut rate pricing too. It’s worth looking into.

Same question, budget $700-1000. Brands and feature recommendations appreciated!
