Nest thermostat without C-Wire

Apologies if this has been discussed. Nest claims their new thermostat works with 85% of systems without a C-Wire. Does anyone have first hand experience with this?

Yes, my in-laws didn't have a c wire but the app had me connect the wiring so that it received power from one of the other lines. Pretty sure it had a jumper but it's been several years.

I have one with no C wire. Working perfectly over a year.

I used to use one in a house without a c-wire. the problem I ran into is during the early spring late winter when I had very little use of my hvac system... too warm for heat and too cold for cool... since the hvac didn't run the battery in the thermostat died after about a week.
To remedy this I scheduled the fan to run twice a day for about an hour each just to kick on the unit to "charge" the thermostat

Good tip. I'll keep that in mind.

I’ve never installed a system without a C Wire. If there’s no need for it, I just tuck into the wall behind the plate. They are very easy to add if you don’t have one already. Go look at the furnace pop the cover off and if there’s a spot to hook up a C wire you can do it that way.

I was having issues with mine when I first installed thinking I didn't have a C-wire. After a little bit of troubleshooting, I noticed there was a C-wire tucked away and hidden in the wall. Look around to see if you have one tucked away first.

Had issues on both of my systems. Units would start and stop constantly and never really cooled. There was no c wire connected but fortunately for me it was run with the rest of the wires. I had to hook it up at the unit upstairs and at the thermostat. After that its worked fine
