My tv is stuck on the wall bracket

You know those safety screws that screw up into the bottom of the tv bracket to keep the tv from slipping off the end of the bracket? Well on of the screws is completely stripped and tightly screwed to the point of not budging. I oiled it, used the rubber band trick - nothing has worked.

To make matters worse is the tv is mounted just above the fireplace mantle so I have very little room to work with. I can’t fit a drill anywhere under the screw.

Any ideas as to what to do about this? I need to get the tv down to try to work on it.

There is no way to get a hammer back there. The screw is covered by the actual bracket. So no I can’t cut it either.

It’s like this safety lock but screwed all the way up underneath the bracket and with the tv on front of course.

Get a throw-away one of these. Big enough for the tip to cover the head of the screw. Fill tip up with JB weld and place over screw head to dry. 60% of the time it works everytime

I’ll give it a try. Thanks

Maybe hold off on trying until more posters chime in. That was just the first thing that popped up in my head. Surely someone else has had this problem

I would just slide the tv completely off the side of the bracket but unfortunately it has steel tabs that bend back towards the wall that prevents that. Yet another safety feature.

Can you bend the tabs with pliers?

Haven’t been able to yet. I don’t have the proper leverage to do it.

How about a reciprocating saw with a long blade? Uniless it’s an ultra thin mount bracket, that should work.

Edit: post pictures and you’ll get better guidance to your particular situation.

That space circled in red is about a half inch of open space from the wall. Not much room to work with.

You could get a ratchet back there and pull the lags out. It would take the TV down with the mount still attached

Yeah. That may be my last resort.

This should be a lesson to all. A single friggin innocent screw can cause the most insane headache.

Have you loosened the mount and tilted it up?

From your picture it looks like it's still pointing down. Tilt it up and give yourself some room. Maybe a long needlenose pliers.

what about a dremel with the flex attachment, would you be able to get it back there and start cutting?

Yep. Done that. That screw won’t budge.

You could use the Dremel with flex.

Or a drill with a similar flex attachment with a screw extractor. Can probably find a flex attachment at home Depot or the like.
