It is in drafty/ dampest room in our old house and It could relate to that is all I can think of. Rarely used anymore since we all have tablets, but it's tax time and It would be good to auto fill again this year and retieve the old files.
Can anyone recommend some things to check or do?

Well we need more specifics. Does the screen do anything? Is it beeping, any lights? Can you hear the fan come on or anything? A clicking noise? Or is it just totally dead?

did you check the outlet? check breakers/
plug computer into another outlet in another room?
Have you had a power outage at your house?
IS your computer on a good surge protector?
Has there been lightning near your house?
Rule these out then look at the computer
IF none of the above is the problem then does the fan on the computer come on?
IF so is the computer booting but nothing on Screen?
and how old is this thing? laptop or desktop?

It is totally dead. No beeping, no screen blink, no fan cuting on. no clicking sound. I've checked the power cord to make sure it's good . It's always been on a surge protecter. And the outlet it's plugged into works flne.
Computer is prob 5 years old

TurboTax online so you won't be relying on data on an old POS.

Well there are better trouble shooters on the board than me, but sounds most likely like a bad power supply, or possibly the power button switch. Either one's an easy fix.

I think power button switch. What is the fix?

Buying a new power supply and putting it in the machine.

^^it just needs a replacement power supply. Really easy to change if you can turn a screw driver.

This is not a fix, but a simple work around to see if the power button is actually failing.
to bypass the power button...open the computer and there will be some jumpers, usually labeled. Find the one for power and unplug it. Take a screw driver and touch it to the pins that the power jumper had been connected to. Once in the correct position the screw driver will make the connection and turn the computer on...assuming that it's simply a bad power button.
