Well when I was mining Eth it was a bitch due to the heat from the GPUs. It's alot of money to invest to get started. The antminer posted above is $16k. Maybe you make $25 per day or so. It's a long way to break even.

It all depends on the cards.
At this moment, an RTX 3060Ti can make you:
$4.13 before electricity (ETH)
$3.79 after electricity (ETH)
$4.91 before electricity (ERG)
$4.57 after electricity (ERG)
And that’s if you’re using just your gaming PC.

Are those numbers accounting for LHR? P.S. good luck getting a 3060 TI. Not to mention it's gonna take ~6+ months to break even if you can get a card at MSRP. So after a year from when you're able to secure said 3060 TI, if ETH 2.0 doesn't hit first, you walk away with a couple hundred bucks. Doesn't seem worth the hassle of fricking with it to me. If you really want to get into Crypto as a hobby I'd be looking at proof of stake coins versus proof of work coins especially with GPU mining going the way of the dodo soon(?).

But you are also assuming ETH stays at a stagnant value

i'm sure those values are coming from non-LHR cards.
but you gotta think. ETH isn't the only mineable coin out there. sure, the current hashrate vastly outweighs Ravencoin and Ergo. the way it was put to me was this:
"currently, there's $100 to be made and ETH is paying $95 of it."
no one knows what's going to happen when the hashrate moves from ETH to another coin, but to think that mining will completely go away, like the flip of the switch, when ETH moves to PoS is crazy.
Ravencoin block rewards are supposed to halve at the end of the year, or so i'm told. and if BTC has any indication of that, that should move the price up to make it profitable to mine.
also, i'm at 85-90% ROI by just using 4-1660 supers and 1 3060Ti. i had a 5700xt and 6700xt, but something happened to them to be out of commission at the moment. hoping to get them repaired.

I don't think it's going to go away overnight, just be even less appealing once ETH is gone. There seems to be a lot of interest in moving away from POW for Blockchain decentralization and I personally wouldn't be advising people not already invested to plop down thousands on GPU rigs right now. One it's a bad time to be buying GPUs and two the uncertainty surrounding GPU mining going forward.

Even if you mine on them for 2 months and the market tanks, 3000 series cards are still going to be in high demand on the secondary market. Making your money back at worst will be very easy

yeah and that's true and nobody knows what's going to happen after ETH 2.0. will the market be flooded with used mining cards or will people just move on to the next coin? like all investments, it's going to be a risk.
i'm definitely not telling you to go out and do this....
maybe start out with this and see how it goes...

If you're just getting in you'll be paying top dollar for those GPUs or waiting a long time to get multiple 3000 series cards at MSRP which will be LHR cards. Sure if you call the top you may be able to come out ahead on liquidating the GPUs, but you likely won't and will be trying to sell your GPUs when everyone else is which isnt going to be today's eBay pricing. I'm just saying if you are getting in now you could be looking at the better half of a year, if not a full one, from today to getting your rig together to breaking even on your equipment and in a year GPU mining could be a fraction of what it is now. There's a fundamental change to GPU mining on the horizon and GPUs are more expensive than ever, I can't imagine deciding to jump in now.

I thought about doing it but the profit margin on those $2k mining machines didn't seem worth the noise.

That thing basically requires two separate 15amp circuits that have NOTHING else on those circuits. I guess technically, you could run a couple of them on a dryer circuit when you're not using it.

I do and have done a lot of it in the past. It’s how I accumulated most of my wealth
