I'm not very computer savvy so you'll have to pretend like im a baby when outlining steps. I know that Time Machine is popular, so how do I set that. When it asks for a disk during setup, does that mean like an external hard drive or something? Recommendations for one? Anything?

idk but my computer has been acting all fricked up lately. it's a 2011 15" MBP and if it bricked one day, id kms

Couldn't be simpler. But you need an external. Select that as your Time Machine disc and it does the rest.

WD My Passport 500GB

This is the one I use and it works great. (You don't really need one for mac, any external drive will do.) Make sure whichever external drive you get is larger than your internal HD.

Yup
ETA: last time I did one all I did was plug the external in, as soon as I did TimeMachine popped up and asked me If I wanted to use it. Clicked yes and that was it.
