Mac Setup Help

I am struggling with an issue on a Mac. There is one user account and it was originally logged in to my mother in laws apple id. She gave it to my son who kept the same user account but logged into it with his apple id. Thing like facetime, messages etc are showing his data, but the photos app is still bringing up her pictures.
I can not for the life of me figure out why. Any suggestions?

See if son's apple id is an admin then try to remove her account. If not then ask for her password so you can login and reset the machine to default and then setup for your son as desired

it lets different users have different profiles, for starters, lol

I was going to start over but there are lots of school files that are there now that I am worried about losing if I reset to default.

hmm so are there really no options? I'm by no means a Mac expert so I am confused as to why everything from my mother in law is signed out except the photos

are you sure its her iCloud Photos? could be photos locally stored on the hard drive. try closing the photos app then hold down the option button and open it. it should ask you which photos album you want to open. it could be pointed to her old photos album
make sure under settings>appleid>iCloud that photos are turned on. also in the photos app, go to settings>iCloud and make sure iCloud Photos is checked. that should pull in any photos that are on your son's iCloud account.
once you have it straight you can delete her old photos album by clicking on the desktop then clicking Go in the menu bar. Click on Home then go to pictures in the finder window. you should see her old photo album there. delete it. you may have to do this step before it creates your son's iCloud photo album

90% sure both OS allow for shared photos and files between users.

100% on a Mac.

That’s the one I had questions about but thought was possible- I have a couple Macs, but only one of them has a second user account, and I’ve never needed to share between the two.
It’s definitely a feature on Windows, to the point where you often get asked if you want files and programs to go into the common or individual profile.

Yes its working as intended. If you log in with icloud it will show you your stuff. Even if you do it on somebody else's computer. Log out and log in as yourself. Damn. its not that hard.
