I have a 4 or 5 year old MacBook pro that either the motherboard went out or the hard drive. I brought it in and it is being looked at now.

At what price point on the repair would it be worth to just get another computer all together.

Was thinking of switching to a surface 4 as the programs I use for work are a little funny on the mac book before this happened. But, this may be pushing my hand to make a decision.

Computer is for home personal use mainly, but, I do work from home from time to time.

If it's the hard drive it should be cheap to replace, if it works for you then keep it.

If it's the motherboard it will be expensive and you should just toss it out.

What year MacBook and what size? Apple has a repair program for the 15-17" models for certain years. They will replace it for free if it falls under those programs.

I am not 100% certain (still need to pick it up from fixit tech place). But I believe it is at least 15 inches and about 4-6 years old.

You have a link for the return program.?

Yep. I have a 2008 15 inch that had a faulty motherboard in 2011 (i think). Apple replaced it free of charge. I have since upgraded the hard drive with a SSD and boosted the RAM. The laptop runs great for being almost 10 years old.

Looks like it is a Mac Book Pro 15.4
Model A1286

Where do I check to see if Apple would cover it?

I was told the laptop has a faling GPU and to change that they would have to change out the logic board.

Seems like you are covered. Bring it to Nortech in Hammond to get it fixed. The corporate stores do not work on anything over 3 years old, and they are the only authorized service and reseller in SE Louisiana.

The Apple Store in lakeside won't do it? I have set up an appointment with them, but not until next Tuesday.

Nope. They don't have the ability to work on any equipment that old. I'd call AppleCare before you waste your time going to that appointment.

I called Apple Support and they weren't sure if the store could repair it, so I just had them mail me the return package and I'll just mail it in to have them fix it and mail it back.

Thanks for the heads up.

Update on this, I ended up calling Apple and they mailed me a return box to send in. Sent it in, logic board was changed free of charge and already back in my hands. All in under a weeks time all the way around.

Thanks for the advice again
