For outdoor use but doesn't include PoE?

Because you know, everyone has electrical outlets on their soffits.

I'm shaking my head here. By definition those cameras will likely be far away from the router and need Ethernet to stream decent hd.

I guess it was too expensive to add the same feature $30 webcams have.

A wifi camera that you have to hardwire! Brilliant idea CAD.

Just saying I've seen lots of people that do where they have floodlights/security lights. You could also convert the wiring there to an outlet if you didn't have one already. Just FWIW.

But I agree, a PoE solution would be better. Less wireless streaming the better. But their target market isn't somebody who even knows what PoE means. It's somebody that wants to plug in an outdoor camera, use their phone to connect it to WiFi, and call it a day.

wait so you dint have to run a power cable to the nest cam? I guess that's not your definition of a 'wire'

Nothing says rock solid HD video stream like a wifi camera mounted outdoors near metal gutters behind a brick wall.

PoE on a remote webcsm is as dumb as a headphone jack on a phone.

Bingo, plenty of hardwired options on they market. That's not their niche. Some people buy hardwire cameras and some people buy inflatable hot tubs.

FWIW I'm not a Nest fanboy. I do own a Nest protect and have a thermostat in my office but they were both free. I hate the thermo.

Yes. Some people just want good enough without much work. It's the same as why people buy desktops as opposed to assembling the components. Putting together a computer is like snapping together legos, but the majority of people can't be bothered. They will just buy whatever Dell or HP has available.

They buy it, plug it in, and open the app on their phone and they can see their driveway.

If you need a serious solution you aren't going with this camera.

no, i'll spend 1/5 as much money to buy one that actually frickING ROTATES, has an Ethernet port and allows me to save the video to my own server without trying to nickel and dime me.

people are stupid.

Preach! The wifi cameras are great for checking on the dog or kids but they are not for security.

You grossly overestimate the tech savvy of the average consumer.

i guess so.

but if you're going to charge $200 for this POS and not adding ethernet, you have pretty much driven those who are on the fence to a cheaper product.

are there zero nest fans who would be interested in a webcam they can hard-wire?

While I agree, my network engineer hat goes on every time I consider doing this, and I would want to have a local server that is constantly synced/backed up to a remote site, just in case. Then I start thinking about setting up a cloud server somewhere, building a web app, and push notifications, and then I get very "meh" on doing it.

100% I would be. I have the Thermostat and the indoor camera. Wanted the thermostat, camera was a gift. Camera is pretty meh and I have it turned off most of the time anyway.

Actually like the thermostat though. But that's just me.
Won't defend their cameras.

i'll be honest, i don't really use the DVR on my foscam much.

i like to peek in on it live from time to time and i have a motion sensor setup to snap photos and email them to me of movement and record 30 seconds.

thats about it. the instant notification is nice but can OVERWHELM your inbox very quickly with photos.

since i'm not running a convenience store with lots of criminal activity, those features are more of a novelty than anything else.

Have you seen the new color change rings Nest has for the 3rd gen thermostat ? What a game changer. I'm willing to bet Honeywell offers color change kits by Christmas.

I think the opposite is true - nest requires electricity but these use a little vial of mercury to trip the unit.
