Laptop recommendations

So I need a new Laptop, my current laptop is not that old but the battery life sucks, I didn't care that the battery life sucked when I bought it a few years ago, I had never imagined that I would go back to school in my 30's and for my purposes at the time 2-3 hours of life was good enough for me.
I want a big screen 17"
I want a big battery, 80WHr or better
I am thinking along the lines of XPS17 with i5 or Lenovo Legion with i7. If I get an i7 on the Dell I would have zero room for upgrading anything else for what I want to spend.
I want the "thin and light" design of the Legion or XPS, I know Microsoft and HP make similar models, I honestly just don't know much about what is out there.
Capping budget around $1500
I am OK with upgrading hard drive and ram post purchase
I get student pricing, I have a university .edu email address.

Gonna be a hunt for you but at least you have an idea of what you want. Not sure if your battery issue is related to treating it like a desktop and leaving it plugged in most of the time. Im guilty of that myself and have killed some laptop batteries over the years. I’ve had good luck with MSI and Asus laptops over the years.

Keep an eye out at slickdeals.

Nope, 42WHr battery with an i7 processor kills my battery quickly.
Inspiron 5770, it is fast enough but there is no way to upgrade the battery.

Just find a good Lenovo laptop. They are on top of the laptop game right now. For the price you are spending id get one with ryzen 5000 series, though. I’m an intel fan boy but the ryzen 5000 series is insane for laptops right now.
Edit: if you have time to wait Lenovo’s new 2021 series is coming out in a couple months, too.

are you sure you want that big of a screen? the new macbook air computers, yes on 13 inch, have an incredible battery life (around 12 to 14 hours) and a great "redesigned" keyboard that used to plague them.
the macbook pro coming out later this year is rumored to be 16 inch screen with the new apple silicon m1 (just like the macbook air) and possibly 16 core (macbook air m1 is 7 or 8 core).
you can outfit any of them with up to 16 gb of ram and up to 1 tb hard drive space.
i realize this may be against what you might consider, but you have a healthy budget and i believe you might want to look at all possibilities especially for battery life.
more information - currently on 1st page of macrumors page

LG Gram
The LG Gram 17 from Costco for $1499 looks pretty good... I didn't know LG made laptops.

Just got a Surface Laptop 3. The 15" with the 3:2 aspect ratio seems bigger than it is...which is plenty. I'm really happy with it. Very MacBook Air-like in form factor and it's all metal.
The 15 with Ryzen 5, 16/256 new is $1399 new. I paid $750 for the 15, 8/256 on eBay.

Right now, I'd go with he Dell XPS17.

I couldn't pull the trigger on the XPS, to get what I wanted pushed the budget almost to Macbook pro pricing. Costco had $200 off on the LG gram, I got to see it in person and I have 90 days to decide if it is a keeper.
