Is an iPad overkill for a 3 year old?

I'm an android guy, but for a 3 year old Apple is the way to go, right?
At $280, I'm probably gonna pull the trigger on it today

I dont think kids that age need screen devices as much as they need to develop motor skills and coordination.

Give him an Etch a Sketch and tell him it's an iPad

I mean, I agree. And we have been extremely strick with her screen time (basically none). However, her older cousins all have tablets and she is becoming interested. And screen time will still be observed and restricted.
But, this is not a discussion on that

Get her in the yard and sun. I wish we could roll back time. Gees

ive found my 5yo (going to be 6 tomorrow!) will ask for our phones on long car rides or he'll drive us insane talking and bouncing off the seats.
he plays minecraft and is pretty good at it. i don't see this as too much different than sitting around building legos (which he spends hours doing)
you may want to think about this a bit more. i'm in your shoes and here are my choices
- nintendo switch (he can play it with his family, the games are kid friendly and when he wants, he can 'take it with him' as it has a tablet built in)
- $99 amazon fire tablet w/ a rubberized case around it. cons - amazon tablets tend to get extremely slow very quickly..also my problem with ipads
- phone/small screen device. you dont have to have a phone plan to turn on wifi and let your kid have a small device he can hold in his lap. cons - you'll need some type of wifi when on trips in the car since 99% of what he will want to play depends on internet.
i think we're going with the switch because @ $300 we have something that the whole family can enjoy as well as something he can take with him and we don't have to worry he's going to get on youtube or something. you're going to spend $280 on an ipad when a switch at $20 more is probably going to be more appropriate.
eta switch is going on "black friday deal" starting this sunday where they give you mario kart for free and 3 months of 'online' whatever that is.
switch rarely has a sale so i'm going to jump on this. something you may want to consider...

i'm 54 and my kid spends PLEEEENTY of time outside but sometimes you need to be able to get some work done without constantly worrying about what your kid is doing.
nothing wrong with your kid having a tablet-type device. its all about balance and being a parent.

That is what I would recommend. My 7 year old got a Fire Kids Edition for Christmas last year. You can set up screen time limits on them fairly easily, and his total screen time is capped. But you can also limit it further, to how much time is watching videos, playing games, reading, etc. I think we have a 90 minute or 2 hour cap on games, an hour on videos, and unlimited reading time. He learned pretty quickly that when time is up, time is up.

+1 here for the Fire tablet.
Plenty of options for parents to limit what the kid can do.
Also not really a big deal if it happens to break.

3yo is a little young, but you do you. Mine (7 and 10) both have fire HD8+. Much cheaper tablet for a kid with many overlapping apps. These also have wireless charging for when the USB charging port craps out. Opted to go w/o a case and only a screen protector. That decision was based on a fire10 getting a busted screen when removing it from the case so it could be used with Osmo.
Whether you go with an iPad or Fire, check out the Osmo line of apps/games. Educational games that your kid will probably be exposed to in school/daycare.

i hope your kids dont get tetanus on that rickety old wooden walkway in your back yard.

Don’t do it. You can wait a few years if the kid “must” have a tablet.
Getting her something bc others have it isn’t a good enough reason in this case.
Also
It’s not on sale. Same price. Getting a free game and 3 months of online service....

I have an older iPad that I've had for probably 3-4 years. It's basically my little girls at this point (she's 3 y/o also)
She mainly just watches youtube on it though and we don't let her just stay on it for more than 30 minutes a day (and some days she doesn't get on it at all). Her older cousins are 5 & 9 and they can't go anywhere without a screen in their hands, which is pretty alarming.
I'm thinking about getting a newer/faster one pretty soon if I can find a deal on a used one.

Amazon makes a fire tablet for kids that is way cheaper. And is basically rubber so it’s drop proof. I’d check that out too.

How is your kid supposed get that chronic Text Neck, I've been reading about, by his teenage years if he doesn't start looking down at a screen by the time he is a toddler?

Get the Amazon Fire for kids and be very strict with time limits. That way they get exposure to tech but it doesn't consume them yet.
