We are switching to Xfinity blast at the end of the month and rather than rent their all in one gateway device, I plan to buy one. I like the idea of an all in one unit, but wanted some feedback from people with more knowledge than me.

Our use is pretty light. At most, I’ll stream live sports while my wife simultaneously streams Netflix or Hulu. Other than that it is simple work VPN, etc. it’s a 2,000 sqft house on a relatively small footprint and I have a Netgear extender plugged in upstairs. The change was precipitated by UVerse not being able to deliver a consistent level of quality here. Hopefully xfinity works a bit better.

Any thoughts on the combo unit? Is it an option or a total nonstarter? I was looking at a Motorola unit like this:

No go. They suck.

I had an all in one and it constantly dropped and needed resets. Got my own modem and router and haven't had a problem in 5 years.

You also can replace what breaks.

I have one and love it. Setup was a breeze and the connection is very good (I have 100MBPS from Comcast). Had to restart it maybe once in the past year and a half, which is low in my experience with other routers/modems.

Would highly recommend.

You need to be sure to buy a modem that's been approved by Comcast: LINK

They're kind of shitty. I'd think you'd be happier getting a modem and router. Make sure it's compatible and I'd steer away from the Arris surfboards. Netgear all day. Or linksys if those are compatible.
