My dad asked me to pick up a new iphone for my mom as a gift. The XR seems like the one she needs. I don't want to activate it yet, seems like buying from Apple is the only real option out there, are there any better deals elsewhere?

Also, am I correct that the XR is the right move for a 65 year old grandmother?

I have an XR and it'd work well for her I think. However, I'd consider an 8 or 8 plus too for 2 reasons.

First TouchID > FaceID IMO. FaceID isn't terrible, but sometimes you want your phone to open without having to look at it, like when driving, or having to hold it at arms length like when in bed.

Second, the new interface without a home button. I assume she's coming from a previous iPhone so that will take some getting used to whereas it'd be the same on an 8/8+

Is the 8 similar in processor etc? I hate to step back to a old phone for same cost.

It’s one year behind in processor. A11 instead of an A12. Will she get 1 year less useful life out of it? Maybe, but it also is cheaper which gives you money to upgrade after 3 years instead of 4. With 5G reportedly not coming to iPhones until 2021, holding it 3 years might work out better.

It literally took me two minutes to get used to the no home button. Now I grab an older version iPhone and just try swiping up lol. It’s crazy how natural it is

Couldn't State with this more. FaceID is so much easier. Mine recognizes my face from less than a foot away. And opening it while driving is super easy. You don't have to look at it.

If you're not getting an Iphone as a Christmas present, I suggest waiting for deals at Sams or Costco. They usually have some type of store credit($200-300) with a purchase and activation on there phones.
