I'll be getting the Dell Venue 8 Pro for Christmas. Was looking for something a bit smaller than the 11in tablets and just needed something to do similar to what you said, mainly reading documents and whatnot. And then I got the keyboard to be able to edit Excel and Word documents on the go. I travel quite a bit as well.

Surface Pro 3 and don't look back.
The surface pro is so much more useful that it really is not a comparison. There is nothing that I know of that an Ipad does better. JMHO

but he wants a new tablet. The Pro 3 can easily replace an ipad and a macbook.
Yep, the surface freed up a lot of space and weight in my travel bag. Until Apple sees fit to grant us heathens both a usb and sd port I will never own another of their products.

Have you considered a Chromebook?

I believe a Chromebook will do what you want. They have more functionality than a tablet but less than a MacBook or Windows laptop.
For ~$200 you can get an 11" screen, decent keyboard and trackpad, 2 USB ports, HDMI, 2GB RAM, decent CPU, good battery life, quick boot time from Samsung, Acer, ASUS and HP. If you want a 13" it'll cost ~$50 - $100 more.
Most come with a 16GB or 32GB SSD and 100GB free cloud storage for 2 years. But with the USB ports storage is unlimited.

The only thing is I need a tablet, not a lap top.

This is absolutely true. The only time I touch my iPad is to browse the web before bed , and that's only because it's lighter to hold and it fits on my nightstand better. There is nothing the iPad does as well as the Surface.
