I'm trying to decide on a 4 person console:

VS a 2 person console

I would love to be able to play 4 players but I have no idea if that's even an option with a RPI4. I've never messed with RPI, but we want to turn our bonus room into a full on game room and this will be step 1.

Also, is it necessary to install a roller ball like Golden Tee uses or is that just overkill?

It’s possible

As someone with a 4 player cab, build a nice 2 player fighter style cab first, it will get much more use. Look at CAD’s One Up thread, you can get a few cabs going pretty cheap that way instead of building full size.

I play my rollerball a lot, I like it. Pic of my cab is in CAD’s thread as well.

I was thinking of just building one cabinet because we want to put in a shuffleboard table, pinball machine, foosball. So I'd rather build the first one with 4, then be sorry it doesn't support it down the road and not really have room for another.

Can you choose which set of buttons you play with or is it just the first two from the left on the console?

Oh I will get something good since foosball is my favorite. You guys can delete or ignore this thread now since I discovered CAD's thread thanks to Dam. I'll post questions in that one.

Is that going to go next to your miniature version of LSU’s campus?

i gotta admit i'm really leaning towards 4-5 units looking at what others have done in creating their own 'mini-arcades'.

how can you look at some of these rooms and not be inspired?

I did what you want, don't be me if you have the room to do multiple cabs. Here is mine. My controls are all RGB LED to make up for having multiple shite, so it turns the lights/colors on based on the game you are playing.

5 joysticks

2 on the far ends are for 4 player games with 4 buttons

Center one above the trackball is a 4 way tied into 1 player controls for classic games with a straight 3 button setup

2 inbetween are first and second player with fighting game setups.

Have a trackball and a spinner, 3 buttons in the center are for controlling my front end which is hyperspin and the a coin and start button for each of the 4 players.

This control board is a mess and using the 4 way/trackball/spinner is kinda aggravating with the 1 and 2 player right there.

Building dedicated cabs is the way to go if you have the room, I didn't when I built this cab and will probably be adding some 1up cabs like CAD and reduce this cab control board to a traditional 4 way with 4 buttons for each player, maybe a curved fighting style for players 1 and 2. Don't do straight like I did, curved is better.

Any of you guys running MAME off of a PC and not a Retropie? I'm having issues with my damn PC not loading MAME at all, never an issue I've dealt with before. Hard to find any info online about the issue either...

No I run a full PC, RPis weren’t remotely powerful enough when I built my cab.

Go to Build your own arcade controls forums. They can help you with Mame. There are lots of sources online, Mame is an interesting and frustrating program because they do it to run games as close to the arcade version as possible sacrificing optimization.
