How would I go about doing that? I believe that I have a really really good idea that I want to seriously look at, and while I have some programming experience, and I could probably struggle through it. I would like to see about finding a programmer that can navigate through the idea quicker.

Make anyone you talk to about it sign a confidentiality agreement.

and prepare to pay far more than you anticipate now. these "start up ideas" are almost always a giant time sink

What do you mean exactly? They fail? Or just require a lot of time?

Pay them for their time and up front. Not with the whole "percentage of the company" spiel

Easy way to drive away programmers IMO.

usually the idea guy has no idea what they really need and it takes a ton of time to work out the system. either be prepared to shell out a significant amount of cash for a good programmer or provide them with a slice of the company - assuming they are interested in taking that route.

What I meant was, usually when someone comes to me and the first thing they want is an NDA, it's always followed by the "I'll pay you via a percentage of the company" deal. For some reason, those two things always go hand in hand with the startup ideas people. Nothing against the NDA itself, just known in the programming community and my experiences as a bad sign.

Isn't the NDA so they don't steal the idea/concept and take it elsewhere? I thought tech companies are pretty bad about stealing ideas?

Yeah it is. I guess how I said it came across the wrong way. It's more the way you go about it. The NDA should come after meeting and discussing the basics of what you're looking for.

I agree. I wish there wasn't NDA's, but people can be liars and manipulators. Its unfortunate really.

If you are in Baton Rouge, there's a user group for developers that meets once a month:

Also, this is an event for startups that came through Baton Rouge a while back, so you might want to check it out:
