Is it a flatfile? Have you tried to the Import function (data tab) in excel?

What database engine is the data housed in? Some SQL editors have a function to dump results into a .csv. You can also probably find a free ETL tool to export the data to .csv (maybe even directly to Excel).

Were the old datasets created by the same program(s) ? If so use that particular program (s) to export file to the lowest common denominator such as a CSV file or a text or tab delimited file.

If you don’t have access to the original program(s) but you can view the particular data just using a text editor you may have to just do a lot or some cleanup and then import into the varied data sets excel.
