If it’s DSL and they have a modem/router combo then Best Buy may not have that. You can buy your own DSL modem online but there usually is some configuration involved for them to work. So you’ll probably have to call them. I have CenturyLink DSL and I use my own modem but I did have to call and get the settings. They wouldn’t help me configure it because it isn’t their modem but luckily I have a good bit of DSL experience and all I needed was the settings.

I do IT, getting rid of monthly equipment rentals is my mission. You can pay off your own equipment in about 14 months.
Not sound like a shill for the cable companies, but with upgrades in Docsis occurring about every year or two, to get the fastest speed, you do need to upgrade your modem from time to time.
I looked at BestBuy for the latest and greatest docsis 3.1, 2.5 Gbps, it was almost 300 dollars for a router modem combo. So depending on the provider, you may end up better renting.
So it varies on the debate on renting vs proving your own.

Will need to get modem provisioned on their network, and the credentials for the pppoe config should allow you to passthrough/bridge to third party router. But yes, all could be initiated with ISP customer service
