Sometimes after minimizing Safari to use an app on my IPad, it brings up tabs from a completely different session when I bring it back up. Sometimes from a week or more ago. I haven’t been able to predict when it’s going to happen, though, and it’s annoying to lose my open tabs from that day! Does anyone know why this would happen and/or what I can do to make it stop?

You might want to go to preferences and change it from start up all windows from last session.;

I don’t see that option in the Safari settings, but thank you.

Sorry if I’m being obtuse. Here is what I see in settings.

You're not being obtuse; the setting he's referencing is on MacOS Safari, not iOS Safari.

Are you 100% certain that you're seeing a completely different session? Is it possible that those old tabs were open the whole time and it just moved to the beginning of a huge list of tabs? What happens if you just close out every single tab?

Completely different. I was researching something yesterday and left Safari for the google app. When I returned, the tabs were completely different, and one of them was from an obituary I’d read last week. The tab for the topic I was Googling about was nowhere in sight. I think I’ll start taking screenshots before I leave it to go to an app!

I just realized I’m leaving out something that might be important. I rarely completely close out all of Safari, just close out individual tabs that I’m not using. But let’s say I don’t close out of TD, and then come back and the TD tab will be up, but from a thread I was reading on another day. Other tabs will be websites that I didn’t have open at the time I’d left Safari. Am I making any sense?

Well, I wasn’t expecting a perfect example to happen right away, but I took this screenshot at 10:55.

And then when I returned, it was open to the Food board dinner thread and other pages show on the tabs.

The screenshots you provided are only showing 7 of your open tabs. There are likely more open tabs if you press the tabs button on the top right of your screenshot (the two overlapping squares just below the battery indicator). What do you see if you tap that? What if you long press (hold that button), does it say “Close 7 Tabs” or “Close [a lot more] Tabs”? If the latter, the tabs have always been there in that sub-menu
