I bought my daughter an HP pavilion laptop about a year ago. Unfortunately the screen is now broken and I took it to Best Buy to be fixed. The tech told me that although he wasn’t exactly sure of the cost until it is inspected ($86 for that) that he estimated $300-$400 to fix and I only paid $500 for it new. Should I just buy a new one and forget it or take it somewhere else to be fixed? What would you recommend?

Check out some local, reputable phone repair business. Many of them also do laptop repairs and won't charge for diagnosis/estimates and the actual repairs will likely be cheaper than Geek Squad. Worth a shot at least.

You have a model number? Some laptops are incredibly easy and cheap. Many have great videos on youtube that walk you through the whole process. I've done phones, tablets, and laptops at this point.
