How to get Apple TV remote working

It’s been a year or more since I tried to use any of my Apple TVs. I can get the box to turn on but the box doesn’t recognize or won’t let the remote control anything.
Both of these boxes are mounted outside on a patio. Very rarely used.
It doesn’t appear that I can change a battery in the remote.

What model Apple TV is it?
I know my Apple TV4 with the black remote and the little touch pad on top has to be charged through a lightning cable. Not sure if you’ve tried that or have that model?
Also you can just connect your phone if you have an iPhone and use it.

The older Apple TVs with the silver remotes have a watch battery that can be changed.
Like someone else said, download the remote app on an iPhone. The only catch to that is that the Apple TVs have to be currently on your WiFi network. If you have changed any WiFi settings since using your Apple TVs, you will need a manual remote to update the WiFi settings.

What about the app? I just use my phone.
If not recognizing, just move inside and plug into Ethernet and get it set up then move back outside

If it's the newer apple tv you charge the remote with a lightning cable just like an iphone
